1 week ago - Spielberg was initially reluctant to take the job, feeling his knowledge of the Deep South was inadequate and that the film should be directed by someone of color. Walker was likewise skeptical but was convinced otherwise after watching E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Spielberg waived his usual $15 million salary in lieu of the Directors Guild of America minimum of $40,000. He chose to play down the lesbian subtext between Celie and Shug, feeling that it would increase the rating if he didn't. Rather than cast established stars, Walker sought out lesser-known actors to play the principal roles, since their rise from obscurity represented the experience of characters in her novels.

The Color Purple (2023)…What happened?
Because it released so late in the year and didn’t go to festivals it needed to rely on a big commercial response, but it lost a lot of money at the box office, effectively killing any momentum it could’ve possibly built. More on reddit.com

Why do you think The Color Purple (2023) flopped?
this is like remaking west side story. the subject matter isn't really something that's made for updating. the original already did a great job of capturing the melodrama. it's not like remaking an old black and white silent era film that could use some updating. More on reddit.com
They Pulled It Off: The Color Purple (2023) is Vastly Better Than the 80's Version (LONG POST)
The 2023 version is in no way better than the 1985 version. It gutted the entire arc of the story by downplaying and ignoring the violence in the book and in the 1985 version. The director even cut out the songs from the musical that deal with what a piece of crap Mr. is. Many of the most important moments of the 2023 film are taken directly from the 1985 version. 1 month ago - Pete Hammond, reviewing the film for Deadline Hollywood, reports that although "Spielberg’s version still resonates", the direction of Bazawule "brings a unique vision that makes this version stand on its own as an authentic and valuable addition to The Color Purple legacy", appreciating the photography of Dan Laustsen, which "gives a vision of the early 20th century South rarely seen in films depicting the period, particularly Black lives". Katie Walsh of Los Angeles Times described the director's approach as "modern, while paying homage to the traditions of Broadway musicals", while the cast "takes your breath away", praising Barrino for her "stunning performance as Celie, holding the emotional center over decades" and Brooks, who "steals the whole movie, [...] She brings fire, humor and grit to a character who undergoes a dramatic, tragic arc".

July 7, 2021 - Whoopi Goldberg, winner of the Best Actress Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination, makes a triumphant screen debut as the radiant, indomitable Celie. Born into a painful life with an abusive father, and given away to an abusive husband (Albert, or “Mister,” played with powerful and conflicting notes by Danny Glover), Celie must learn to find her value, love, and strength in sisterhood with equally strong and inspiring women who pass through her life as a child and woman. Goldberg and Glover’s impressive portrayals are complimented by a distinguished cast that includes Oprah Winfrey (also making her film debut, like Goldberg) and Margaret Avery—who both received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress—as well as Adolph Caesar, Willard E.
