Fire Pit: Pros and Cons of In-Ground vs. Above-Ground🔥
February 27, 2025 - An in-ground fire pit, due to its recessed nature, offers a level of protection against these winds. The flames are less likely to be blown about, ensuring a more stable and consistent fire. For instance, while an above-ground fire pit might struggle on a windy evening, the in-ground counterpart would still allow for a comfortable gathering while the fire burns.

Fire pits - in ground or above ground?
Wow you guys get fancy. I dug a hole in the ground. I put stuff in the hole and light it on fire. When it ceases to be a hole I make it a hole again. I actually have two yard holes. One is for burning natural stuff (trees, clippings, etc) the other hole is for scrap wood and such. One gets ashes spread on the lawn, the others ashes get thrown away. I highly recommend making your yard hole big enough to fit a recliner... More on reddit.com
Can I have a small fire pit, above or in ground, in the city?
I can't speak to whether it's legal or not, just that I have seen lots within city limits. I think if you're not an idiot about it nobody cares. To expand, being an idiot about it: What you burn, where you burn, when you burn, how much you burn, and if you have smores or not. More on reddit.com
Above-Ground Fire Pit as kiln?
You can do primitive ceramics in any number of ways. You can pit fire in a tin garbage can for example. Go to youtube and search for primitive ceramics or primitive pottery. It is not going to vitrify enough to hold liquids unless you seal it but humans have been using it for thousands of years. I suggest you avoid the rabbit hole of "Food Safe" which is not defined but do educate yourself on the different types of pottery and how they are mostly used. You can get some very beautiful and functional work with low fire ceramics. Look into what the First people in the southwest of the US have done, what is still done in many parts of the world, etc. Enjoy but do be aware that it is addictive. More on reddit.com

DIY Fire Pit and Seating Area : 15 Steps (with Pictures) - Instructables
April 30, 2021 - I think 10 feet is the minimum recommended distance, but I went with about 80 feet as I wanted to attach a quasi-winding pathway to the fire pit from our existing patio. So this is probably the first error I made. I didn't want to spray paint on the stones, so I lined them up where I wanted, and etched around the perimeter of the stones with a shovel. In hindsight, this layer is almost completely in-ground, so a little spray paint on them would not have hurt, and I think outlining with spray paint would've been less intensive and produced the same desired results.

The 5 Best Smokeless Fire Pits of 2025 | Reviews by Wirecutter
September 25, 2025 - None of the fire pits we tested can so fully replace a barbecue grill or cooker as the Breeo X Series Smokeless Fire Pit X24. There are few things you can’t cook on the Breeo X Series once you’ve made the commitment. That said, it truly demands a commitment, both in price and time. You can cook almost any way you imagine over an open flame. The Breeo X Series has the most cooking accessories of any brand we tested: a SearPlate Griddle, a post and grill plate (which you can also drive into the ground over an open fire, if you like), a kettle hook for a cast-iron pot, or even a pizza oven.

Any advice for putting in a fire pit? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a sunk one over having an above ground one? What are some tips for constructing one?
Thanks!

A good fire needs air to come in at the base. If youre building up its easy enough to leave some small gaps in your first layer to let it breathe. Digging down basically ends up being a fancy, permanent dakota fire hole. That means digging a trench over to a secondary hold and buryiny some cast iron or terre cotte pipe for an air supply. Advantage is that these tend to put out less smoke in the fire. Disadvantage is that its for that pipe to flood wheb it rains and make the pit unusable for a while. Personally, id build up.
