Multimodal storytelling (natural flow and mix of text, picture, video and audio)?

Or just a radically better AI in writing world class novels, with near-perfect memory and near-limitless length?

Or after finishing your favourite series in Netflix or movie in HBO, you could click "continue the story with AI"? Now that would be something...

r/AIDungeon on Reddit: So, what's become of AI Dungeon now?
April 23, 2024 -

I used to have a blast playing it, but then things went downhill. The developers openly admitted to invading privacy by reading players' private stories. Then they added a word filter that totally ruined the game. It seems they even had a falling out with OpenAI and switched to a different AI model. It's been a mess.

So I quited.

While I can't forgive the privacy invasion, I get that the word filter might have been something OpenAI pushed for, especially since they later launched ChatGPT with an even more ridiculous filter.

I'm really curious about what happened next. How has it evolved since then?

They kept developing, introducing better AI models, newer UI, etc. It is a very popular service now, judging by the activity here and the number of new scenarios published daily. As far as the things that bothered you, they are improved, but still there to an extent. The filter is still there, but its accuracy has improved, so it's much less likely to intrude on legitimate content. "8-year-old laptop" won't trigger it anymore. Though, occasionally, it does still throw false positives, especially on a particular type of content that the AI has trouble distinguishing from what they are trying to filter out. The devs have repeatedly stated they have no interest in having humans review your stories, but the technical ability to do that is still there, so it's a matter of trust. But it's important to note that this is true for ALL services. Eventually, AI needs to get its input in plain unencrypted text, and there's nothing stopping whoever is running the AI for you from logging these inputs and so having your story. You just have to trust that they don't. The only way to prevent that is to run the AI on your own computer. Which is a lot easier than you might think. KoboldCPP is one executable file that pops a dialog, which you point to one GGUF AI model file, and then it pops your browser window with a UI similar to AIDungeon or NovelAI. Simple as that, so long as you have a decent enough computer and graphics card. Anyway, AIDungeon has a free tier offering unlimited actions, which is far more compelling than any of the competition. Try it out and see for yourself how it stacks up against what you left behind.

I might add: what's become of AI Dungeon is that they learned from their mistakes, and the primary mistake was relying exclusively on an AI provider that abruptly insisted they heavily police their product or else no AI for you. They switched to other providers with clearer contracts as to what kind of NSFW behavior would continue to be allowed and that didn't themselves insist on violating users' privacy—and it's been for the better! The new models are no where near as stodgy and moralizing as the GPT family has come to be and, in the meantime, they've learned how to become better storytellers while remaining fast and keeping costs low. AI Dungeon's "Discover" functionality is alive and well again with a reasonable layer of common-sense moderation for published content and very, very little (completely computer-driven and (presently) overrideable) moderation for private content. There is a healthy community of players on the platform, on Discord , and here on Reddit, and new features are actively being developed.

r/NovelAi on Reddit: Novel Ai vs Ai dungeon?
May 5, 2024 -

Hello all!

I was a free user of Ai Dungeon for a while, but I switched to NovelAI when everything was at rock bottom. So far that has been pretty good, though it seems the AI art is getting more attention, and I'm personally not as keen on that stuff.

Recenty however, I've been hearing that AI Dungeon has been greatly improved in overall quality and was thinking of coming back and buying the 15 dollar subscription.

Before I do however, I wanted to ask the community one final time exactly how Ai Dungeon compares to Novel Ai, at least the 15 dollar subscriptions for both. I know it has 8k token context, but not much else.

Thanks!

r/AIDungeon on Reddit: Dungeon AI's Memory system is Bad
January 12, 2025 -

It took me a while of making scenarios and playing with Dungeon AI before I realized how bad its memory system is. It's terrible. Here is what happens to every single adventure regardless of how much you pay. Eventually, your character cards are ignored.

  1. The adventure starts off well enough, respecting the character cards, everything is working

  2. As more memories are stored, they eat up more of the available input tokens

  3. Character cards are loaded less frequently until there is no space for them at all

  4. You start waste your time manually deleting dumb memories

  5. You turn off automatic memories so you can manage them yourself

  6. You realize that your character cards still aren't loading because even without any memories, dungeonai is using nearly your entire token allotment on dialogue history so your character cards still don't load

  7. You come to reddit to complain about what should be a really easy fix

All that needs to change is to allow a player to create a quota of tokens for character cards or dialogue history. This is just simple prompt building. Adding the controls to the gameplay settings will probably take more time than letting the user dictate a reserve of quota for character cards.

Yeah, I’ve had alot of issues with memory lately, also generation, when hitting continue it tends to repeat literally everything from the story..

A priority system for story cards would be nice for smaller contexts. Meanwhile here are some measures you can take to help you out: As you found out, disabling auto summarization is really important since the longer your story becomes, the less helpful it will be, until it is actively hurting the cohesion of your story. Memory bank can still be left on as it actually functions rather nice, unless you are really hurting for context. I had good results leaving the description of my main character and their single most important companion (if you have one) on the plot essentials. For story cards, make sure you use their trigger words effectively. For illustration purposes, let's say you have a few story cards for different friends, and their only trigger word is their name. If you mention in context something about your friends but their name wasn't mentioned then their story cards won't load. You can amend that a few ways. You can mention their names every time their name goes out of the context length (You can check it). Or you can put variations of the word "friend" on their trigger, which I don't recommend if you have a lot of similar story cards. Or you can make a list of friends somewhere with their names, it can be on plot essentials or a dedicated story card with the trigger for friends, from which the Ai will fish a name from, and then on the next action trigger the story card.

r/AIDungeon on Reddit: Has AI Dungeon's story quality gotten worse lately?
May 22, 2025 -

Hey everyone, I’ve been playing AI Dungeon for a while and used to really enjoy it. But lately—especially over the past month—I’ve noticed a serious drop in quality. Characters often respond in illogical or nonsensical ways, and they seem to completely misunderstand what my character is saying. It’s making it hard to enjoy the storytelling or keep a coherent plot going.

I don’t remember it being this bad before, and now every story seems to derail into something annoying or boring. Has anyone else experienced this recently? Is it just me, or did something change with the models or the way the game handles prompts?

Would love to hear if others are dealing with the same thing or have found any workarounds. Thanks!

In my experience, it is back and forth in terms of coherence, and often this is a problem caused by AI instructions rather than the model. Deepseek, Harbinger, and Muse are all very good at story generation and often the errors they make are in the minor details (i.e. a character has a mace and it describes him putting his hand on the hilt of his sword). Overall it tends to be pretty good, with my biggest complaint being how often the AI wastes time describing unnecessary/extra shit instead of actually pushing the story forward. And despite some admirable efforts the AI still struggles with niche NSFW elements, i.e. Muse and Deepseek have a bizarre fixation with smearing bodily fluids everywhere, which previous models didn't.

Hmm, I was gonna say…I felt like it was the complete opposite! The new models are absolutely killing it for me! Have you tried Muse or Harbinger or Dynamic Large? Not sure if you’re a paid subscriber, but I’m pretty sure Muse is free, at least. I also tend to do more slow paced, descriptive, slice-of-life and conversation stuff…so that might be what those models excel at. Still, pretty sure Wayfarer, Harbinger and Dynamic Large should be as good or better than always. I’m getting less repetition even when I use the “continue” command, which I never used to touch. Another suggestion if you’re truly getting non-sequitur responses is to check a setting called temperature? I think? I believe you can set it a bit lower for less randomness if it is cranked too high for some reason… Seriously though, I am loving the latest update, myself.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the child of Latitude, but back in a day, in the olden times of 2021, the same very thing happened to "AI Dungeon", one of the firsts of it's name in the market of AI freemium entertainment.

At first, the developers started introducing features that no one asked for, especially the ones you have to pay for. Then - the filtеr came. And it was unlike the one you have - that filtеr would immediately ban you from the app and send your "adventure", that's how the "chats" would be called there, directly to the devs, the real people, for them to review and decide your fate. I was one of the unlucky few and I know well of it, thankfully my neck was spared from the executioner's blade, for I was innocent, just weird.

And people were furious, but... The devs did not answer their pleads. They wouldn't hold answer before anyone, they would ignore their cries. Total separation from the community.

And yet they broke. They were fallen by the people, and they gave up, and they lifted their yoke. The smut was allowed once more, the righteous kind. Turned out, it was their master's decree, and Latitude was powerless before their dark lord, OpenAI.

Truthfully, this story reminds of the AI Dungeon's folly. It follows the same path to the letter. I wish upon you strength, and determination, to fight through these darken times. As for I, the website won't let me in, and I am forced to wander once more, in search of funny AI thingie for myself.

Be strong, for you are the soul of this place, and only by your hands the wonders here are created.

October 20, 2024 - The longer and longer your story goes on, the more Context you need, because you have more and more things happen. Eventually stories always fall apart somewhat, because there's always a Context limit. But AI Dungeon has systems to help with that, such as the Memory system, that compact important things into summarizations.

June 17, 2025 - AI is not proactive by nature. You have to lead it and command it. There are various ways to do that, either using Do to actually do something, using Story to tell it things, adding AI instructions telling it to be active and move things forward and so on.

When I discovered AI Dungeon, it felt like a reality shock, you know? I realized that video games aren't infinite, and everything has a beginning and an end. It seems like AI Dungeon is the only truly infinite game. In AI Dungeon, you can do anything and do whatever you want. Even Minecraft, which is considered an infinite game by the gaming community, isn't truly infinite it has its own limitations. I think it's a shame that AI Dungeon isn't more popular and well-known in the video game community

Yo Guys! I've been playing ai Dungeon for quite long but every time I play one story for a while it becomes a bunch of random sentences that don't make sense In one moment I'm standing on a building with someone But in the next sentence I'm already being transported to the Bahamas where there is an alien attack. Do you have any tips or tricks to keep the story in the right tone and make it good for long playing?

I really appreciate any replies! 😎🤙

Honestly, if you want this to be like the AI is your DM and you're playing something similar like an RPG, you're probably going to get frustrated pretty frequently. Sometimes it works like that, but not dependably. I would say the most important key is to edit liberally and use "story" instead of just "do/say" buttons. For example, if there is an object or character in my story that I want to be part of the story but the AI keeps ignoring, then I just go to "story" mode and write, "X says" or "Suddenly the Y" and then let the AI finish that sentence. Sometimes you might even need to refresh a few times for the AI to come up with a good answer. Also, sometimes the AI starts out with a good answer in the first sentence or two, but then the next sentence or two strays off in an irrelevant or wrong (according to what has been established so far) direction. I just erase the part that I don't like, keep the part I do like, and keep going. Does this encourage cheating? Not really for me. As I said, I don't view this as a straight RPG, I view it as a way to get an interesting story, and sometimes bad things happening to the protagonist is part of the story. So I don't reject it every time the AI decides something bad happens to my main character, unless it kills my character in an absolutely BS way, it kills my character without good reason when I'm still enjoying the story, or it is trying to introduce a new plot arc when I believe that we should keep focusing on the current plot arc. I have accepted character deaths, getting kidnapped, and losing limbs before, but only if it works with what's happening in the story. If the AI keeps sending you to other locations for no good reason, just edit the AI's response to make it more acceptable, ask the AI to try again and give you a different response, or delete it entirely and write something yourself. Sometimes I just keep writing until the AI behaves well-enough to create a coherent response to what I wrote!

I'm more of a story writer than I am a game player so I approach it differently but I get a consistent response the majority of the time. Take it scene by scene rather than thinking of the context of the entire story. Anytime you change location or add someone or something changes the scene, take the time to set the scene up. What writing style do you want to use for that scene? What do you want the tone of that scene to be? Who are the characters in that scene? What is each character trying to do or trying to accomplish in that scene? Add all of that to "styles". If something happens in that scene that you need the AI to remember, put it in "remember". If something in the story changes one of the NPCs or the main character in some major way like they gain a new power, make sure that's in "world info". Yes all of that slows down the progress of your game or your story or whatever. But it's either don't slow it down and get some inconsistent behavior from the AI or slow it down and make sure the AI has all of the information it needs to give you a coherent output.

r/AIDungeon on Reddit: Question and Help about Story Summary.
November 9, 2024 -

I'm relatively new to AI Dungeon, but I already have a pretty good understanding of how all the mechanics work (AI instruction, Plot Essentials, etc.). However, I haven't paid much attention to the story summary.

Right now, I leave auto-summarize on and edit it now and then, since it often writes complete nonsense. So far, this method seems to work fine. Since my playthrough is becoming very long, I've noticed that the story summary mostly focuses on recent events. I guess that leaving it this way enriches my current events and story, but maybe I’m using it the wrong way.

So, to all the experienced AI Dungeoneers out there.. for a very long playthrough, should I leave the story summary as is or manually write all the key moments from the start of the adventure until now? What is your suggestions?

Thanks!
