Hey, I wanted to ask about the software when buying a used Akai mini. While searching for information about this pad (im completely new to making music) I've discovered that it has some sort of downloadable software - the only condition to meet is typing in the product number (key?) on their website. So, if I have no way to check if this code has already been used (got an offer off a pawn shop), is it still worth buying it? Also, can someone help a beginner out with what other software (preferably free, windows 10) to use to make this pad work? I'm too broke for FL

Software in question is Akai's daw called mpc beats, it's fun as a starting point, but personally I got bored with it pretty quickly and switched to Ableton. You can get abletons full capabilities with a 3/6- month trial (don't really remember how long it is, but definitely longer than a month) and after that you can just use their free version, however limited it may be. You could try redeeming the code with a chance of Akai letting you register your controller when selecting in the right box that you bought it used, not really sure if it works but definitely worth a try. If you can get MPK mini for a good price compared to the new unit it'll definitely serve you well regardless of all the additional software included

Just to clarify; MPC Beats is a DAW like software and can be used to make sounds/songs. It is a free download. There is also a configuration app which changes how the keyboard sends our midi/etc. Again also free, but not truly needed unless other user changed all the settings on the keyboard.

Akai FIRE vs MPK Mini MK2
The FIRE always looked dumb to me. It doesn't do much that mouse click don't do. It's piano mode and finger drum mode look worse than a normal midi controller; which would have actual keys and pads. It's more expensive too.

January 6, 2015 - Right now I am playing on my friends MPK Mini Mk2 with the CCK and an unpowered USB hub and like it very much! The pads feel great and the keyboard has a good size and weight for the road. So now I am wondering what the differences between the Mk1 and the Mk2 versions are because I would prefer to leave the USB hub at home. Akai's website says that the Mk1 version is 0.35 lbs heavier and the pads are velocity sensitive instead of pressure- and velocity-sensitive.

August 15, 2015 - I've just recently acquired an AKAI MPK mini mk2, which comes with MPC essentials. I have never used a midi keyboard before nor the MPC essentials software - so if you use any jargon in your responses I probably will have no idea what you're talking about. The problem I am having at the moment is that the pads on the midi keyboard are not matching up to the pads on MPC essentials - it seems when I hit them random ones light up.
