There are 3 major criticisms of Alienware: The first is that they're too expensive for the components you get inside. Often they'll charge $4000-5000 for a computer with $2000-2500 of components in it... The second reason is that they use nonstandard parts so it's very hard to work on or upgrade. The third reason is that the parts that are nonstandard are usually worse than standardized parts, and they cheap out on a lot of stuff so it's pretty common that your $5000 machine lasts a third of it's lifespan. For example, you might have a motherboard that has has literally a third of the VRM capacity of relatively budget consumer motherboards. Or you have a case that heavily constricts airflow, making all your parts hotter and louder and they die quicker because of the heat. This is just a couple issues, but there's literally dozens that are pretty common with their builds. If you don't know much about computers, you probably think this is pretty normal and go on with your life. But for people that are pretty in tune with the market / have actually built their own computer in this price range, they see Alienware computers substandard, especially for the price they're charging, and that people usually buy their stuff because of marketing, not because it's actually a good product.
