An Alienware m18 R1 displaying a power rail failure with a 5 blue, 3 red diagnostic light code indicates a potential issue with the laptop's power delivery system, specifically related to the DDR5 memory power rail. This often signifies a short on a capacitor within that rail, but in some cases, it can be a faulty memory stick.  Understanding the Code:Power Rail Failure:This means the system's power delivery network, specifically the one supplying power to the DDR5 memory modules, is experiencing an issue.5 Blue, 3 Red:This specific blinking pattern (5 blue blinks followed by 3 red blinks) is a diagnostic code that corresponds to the power rail failure. Potential Causes:Short on a Capacitor: A common cause is a shorted capacitor on the DDR5 memory power rail. Faulty Memory Module: In some cases, the issue can be a failed memory stick itself, rather than a problem with the power delivery circuit. BIOS Issues: A corrupted or outdated BIOS can sometimes trigger this code. Hardware Failure: More broadly, there could be other hardware failures related to the power delivery system. Troubleshooting Steps:1. Initial Power Cycle:Disconnect the power cord and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain flea power, Reconnect the power and try to boot the system. 2. Memory Module Check:If the issue persists, try swapping the memory modules to different slots or testing with a known working set. 3. BIOS Update/Reset:If you suspect a BIOS issue, try updating to the latest version or attempting a BIOS reset if available. 4. Professional Assistance:If the problem continues, it is recommended to contact Dell technical support or a qualified technician for further diagnosis and repair, as it may involve more complex hardware troubleshooting. Important Notes:Warranty:.Be aware of your warranty status. while computer is plugged in turn it off with the power button then once it's turned off it will continue to give the same light code, then unplug the charger, hold down the power button for like a minute, then plug the machine back in, hold the power button for another minute then hopefully it will fix itself. I just did this and now i can unplug my machine and also get back the performance that it was lacking in.  Hopefully your issue was the same as mine and that you don't need to replace any parts!

For users returning to this thread, the flash code of 4 amber (or blue in this case), 1 white or a constantly flashing amber light would be indications of a Temporary Battery Failure. The 4,1 code in particular would be due to 2 possible reasons. Either the battery has become too hot and has shut off the charging function to try to cool down the battery, or the computer has experienced an Over Current Protection event while charging and has shut off charging temporarily to protect the computer. Both of  these scenarios are recoverable. However, the computer does not charge until the Temporary Battery Failure condition has been removed. This is working as designed to protect the computer. Use the following steps to recover the charging capability of the computer and stop the blinking LED code from being displayed: Reseat the AC adapter. This can be done by disconnecting the AC adapter for ten to fifteen seconds and reconnecting it to the computer. If the Over Current Protection circuitry has triggered this, it resets the protection and resumes charging If the battery has gone above its thermal threshold, move to a cooler ambient temperature environment and wait for the computer to cool. Once the battery temperature has decreased, the computer should resume charging. If still unresolved, remove the bottom cover and reseat the battery cable to the motherboard.  Run the diagnostic to see if there is an error code for the battery Shutdown the unit Hold down the Fn key and the power button together A quick test should start. Make note of any errors if any If still unresolved, test with a known good OEM battery if available  See this video for additional battery troubleshooting.  Contact Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support Monday through Friday. r/Alienware on Reddit: Flashing Red Power Button
April 25, 2017 -

I've been trying to get my Alienware laptop to boot, and after much trial and error, I still cannot get the laptop to go. After a while, I began to notice a repeating flashing pattern on my laptop. It would blink 3 red flashes then 1 blue flash.

http://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/19/alienware-17-laptop/alienware-17-r4-servicemanual/Diagnostics?guid=GUID-5C341B78-B63D-499C-89D4-D341C006E437&lang=en-us

This appears to be a table for the flash patterns and it says that I may need to replace my CMOS battery. I was wondering if anyone can confirm this diagnosis based solely on the fact that my computer will not boot and I'm getting this repeating 3 red 1 blue flash pattern. Would love to fix this myself, but am I jumping a little too far into amateur computer repair?
