Hi all, I am returning a product on Amazon and the only option is UPS Label Free Pickup.
It says you don't need a printer as the UPS driver will stick the return label on the outside of the package when they arrive to pick it up (see here).
But then on the return instructions page it still shows that I need to print the Return Authorisation Label and place it inside the package before taping it up (see here).
So I am confused now as to whether I need to print this return authorisation label or not? It seems like I would need to print this or else Amazon has no way of confirming my return? But then why does it say 'no printer required'?

August 9, 2022 - No need for a printer :) They come pick it up at your place the next day if you create a request online for a return before 6PM. Or they come the day after. God this is so useful!! Bought shirt it was too small. I was gonna give up and never buy another shirt online because of this...I dont have a car or a printer. It would've been a nightmare to find time to do all this. Went to return something yesterday. I’ve returned things plenty of times. Even just a few weeks ago. I print out my label myself, put it on the box, give it to my UPS guy at my office. Easy.
Now as of yesterday I no longer have a “print label” option. Just a drop-off at Amazon hub or UPS store. The nearest one is 1.5 hours from me!
We have a UPS truck that’s stays parked at our loading dock all day! I put a label on it and set it on truck. Now they want me to drive all over to different stores with a QR code and wait in line?! No thanks.
So I get in a chat, that person has someone call me. They said it’s only for certain sellers. Bull. I just went through all my recent xmas orders and EVERY order only has option for QR code drop off. Even items shipped BY Amazon. All of them no longer allow me to simply print a label.
Is this a very recent change?
As if I needed another reason to ditch Amazon.
I told them I’ll be cancelling all Amazon accounts if returning is made to be inconvenient.

Hi all, I am returning a product on Amazon and the only option is UPS Label Free Pickup.

The reason they want a printed return code inside the box is in case the return label on the outside of the box is so damaged we can not pull up the return or customer data. Doesn’t happen often but it does rarely. Which then might cause an item not returned message. If you don’t have a printer if you clearly write the RMA code or whatever code is under the barcode it should work as your return info back up. Just in case take a pic of that bar code and image for your info. Place the written code in the box and seal. Again it’s just a backup for info for us incase the label on box is damaged. I see a handful of written codes or message in a box each day. Don’t stress

I just really don't understand why some require me to print a label and others don't. I don't have a printer and really don't want to deal with it.

Depends on the vendor and what they've specified for return handling for that specific item. Does it get thrown in a bulk disposition pallet or does it get returned to the vendor for inspection?

The real answer is that it depends on the seller, and you need to check the return policies of each and every one. I don't remember anyone requiring printed labels in the early days of amazon prime, but I'm sure amazon decided to pinch pennies on easy returns, so it seems like there's a fee for the no print QR codes and low volume sellers chose to opt out and use printed return labels now. I'd love it if an actual seller swooped in and proved me wrong, though.

You can email the pdf or jpeg of the label to the UPS Store email address and have them print it - some charge for this, others don't. One near me prints anything for free (unless you're printing hundreds of flyers or something) while another one a few blocks away charges $1 per page. When you find a free-printing one, make sure you're super nice and thankful to the manager for being cool - they could charge whatever they want, and choose to be a good person instead.
