I would think since I gained status through AMEX to begin with, that Marriott properties would honor my benefits no matter what system I booked through. Not sure why you would think that. Benefits that require direct booking Elite status benefits: You can only receive elite status benefits if you book directly with Marriott. A “Non-Qualifying Rate” is a rate a Member pays for a Stay in a guest room at a Participating Property which does not qualify to earn Points or Miles, as well as membership tier benefits. Non-Qualifying Rates are those booked using the following methods: i. The automatic status from the card does not give the required elite night credits. You have Gold status with 0 elite nights. To level up, you need to earn the 50 elite night credits like if you were starting from scratch. Quick and easy ways to 50 elite nights: Get Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex ($650 annual fee) = 25 elite night credits per calendar year (does NOT stack with any other personal Marriott credit card elite night credits) — also gives automatic Platinum status Get Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex ($125 annual fee) = 15 elite night credits There is 40 out of 50 elite night credits for $775 in credit card annual fees. Is there any downside to booking through AMEX versus through Marriott Bonvoy with my status? I would think since I gained status through AMEX to begin with, that Marriott properties would honor my benefits no matter what system I booked through.
I.e. Looking to book for a night in Maui (first night before week at a villa), we but need late checkout time honored through my Bonvoy status because my check in at the villa is 4pm. AMEX is $650 per night; Marriott's website is $787.

The downside of not booking through Marriott / directly with the hotel is that you (usually) won't get Bonvoy reward points for the stay. You can enter your loyalty number when checking out on AMEX Travel and you should then get your existing status benefits during your stay. Alternatively, you can contact the hotel and have it added, or provide it at check-in.
