October 12, 2022 -
sorry for this very specific question. but does anyone know if, out of the regular screens they have, one is "better" than the other? i noticed that for the movie i want to see, depending on the time, it's playing in a theatre with 465 seats available, 201 seats available, 150 seats.. etc. I guess my question is, are the regular screens with less seats better, or the one with more seats? thanks.

Finallyyyyyy my time to shine lol, I love the Varsity. The cinema (#8) with 465 seats is actually pretty flat. So, sitting in one of the back rows makes you feel like you're actually really far from the screen, because you're not high up, it's not stadium seating. So, for that one, I like to be at least around row N or closer. Cinemas 7 is the smallest (other than the VIP cinemas - I do like the Varsity but don't recommend for VIP), with 122 seats. I don't love it. It's also kind of a flat floor with no slope, and the screen is smaller than 8, so I always feel like it's too far away. Plus it's tucked in the corner. I just don't like it. Cinemas 1-6 are the best ones. They're the mid-size ones, they all have the section of two or three rows sectioned at the front, then a an aisle, and then the rest of the seats. These ones are stadium seating, which means you walk in and then walk up the stairs to get to your seat. So I find you get the better view in those cinemas. Plus, in each of those cinemas, there are two rows of comfier, roomier seats. They're not recliners, though. They used to cost more, pre-COVID (they were called Premium) but they don't anymore. But that means that you can't tell which ones they are just by looking at the app. However, I have been there enough to know. If it's a cinema where rows G&H look sort of indented from the others, those are the premium rows. Those are cinemas 1-3. For an example, look at Thursday (tomorrow's) showings of Bros. If it's a cinema where rows E&F look indented, those are the premium rows, cinemas 4-6. For an example, look at tomorrow's showings of Lyle Lyle Crocodile. I always sit in those rows. Like I said, they're not recliners (I wish), but they are comfier and you have more space. I can settle in more. And now they cost the same, so why not. edit in 2024 to say: it still holds true that Cinemas 1-6 are my favourites but they no longer have the premium rows, so I actually stopped going to the Varsity as often as I did because now the seats are just the same as they are at every Cineplex and it's a bummer. it's still the stadium seating, so I prefer them over the flatter ones of 7 or 8 but the premium rows were such a treat!

The original cinema is now screens 7 and 8 IIRC, the ones first past the fish tank, as you turn right from the entrance, and have more seating in a slight inclined floor with two aisles. 7 is the one that can show 70mm film still. If you want a very big screen, then the one with 465 will be one of the two original screens. But smaller screens in smaller cinemas means you can be closer, like their VIP which would be the logical choice for a non 70 mm presentation which is 99.9% of what they show. Just double checked, 7 and 8 are the original, THX certified screens.

This is a great question. I am not from Toronto but I attend TIFF every year and am very familiar with all three of these locations, all of which I admire for many different reasons. My take on how/where to see a movie is how the movie was shot, what format it's in and also the options on auditoriums. Since you asked just about regular auditoriums I'll see how I can break it down but may include some notes on a few offerings: ---------- Cineplex Yonge-Dundas: I love this theatre as it has quite a few options for movies, has an Event Cinema screen and was originally an AMC 24-plex (the VIP section was converted around 2014 in the section where auditoriums #16-21 were and lost a screen with the lounge and kitchen area). Funny bit of trivia is that there is now just 23 total screens; screens 21 technically doesn't exist anymore and 22-24 were not renumbered. - The seats (except for VIP and 4DX) were all replaced about 2019-2020 and are extremely wide, comfortable and gently rock back and forth. I did find the original AMC red seats to be totally fine. - This theatre is also used by Ryerson University students as classrooms in the morning, so if you come for a matinee Monday-Friday you MAY be in the same space as students moving around. It's a sometimes strange sight to see, especially when you are just coming for a movie at that time, but something to note anyways. - If your movie is in the "scope" (2.39:1 format) it would be great if it's in a larger auditorium as these rooms have side-masking and will present the movie on a very wide screen with no letterboxing. Auditoriums 2, 3, AVX 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 23 & 24 all have these screens. Most of the smaller auditoriums also use their masking too but scope movies will shrink down to a smaller size. I still like these rooms too, but just make sure to sit closer. - If you want popcorn, go into the VIP section (if it's open of course) and order one from the small concession counter. You'll get it in the VIP containers which are less noisy and they spread the butter layering a LOT better than the bags. You can do this even if you are watching a movie in a regular auditorium. - Even though you weren't asking about premium auditoriums, AVX #7 has a proper "scope" screen. Make sure your movie is in that format and you'll get a really nice widescreen experience. #6 and #7 USED to be the original largest auditoriums when it opened up as the AMC 24 plex but of course were the first ones to be converted to IMAX, then AVX when Cineplex took over. - Transit is an easy one on this. Jump off at Dundas Station or streetcar and just walk via the entrance to 10 Dundas East and go up a LOT of escalators until eventually you hit the cinema. ------- Varsity: There's a lot to love about this place AND history. It opened in 1974 with just two auditoriums (now #7 and #8 which used to be #1 and #2) and was renovated first in 1997 with the six additional auds then further in 1998 when the VIP section opened. The VIP was the first ever for the Cineplex Odeon chain and of course is pretty dated since the newer form of Cineplex made their own version of the Cineplex VIP experience. With that said, the theatre has had many renovations over the years with new seats added. - Varsity #8 is an amazing auditorium. While of course there is not stadium seating it does have a large scope screen, a great sound system and seating is totally fine for less busy shows. In fact, just about two years ago they removed the first four rows of seats. The front row is now Row E and has a great view of the screen and is not "neck-craning" or close at all. If the show is not busy either, just move to another seat when the movie is in feature if someone sits close or blocks your view. - Screens #1-6 and #7 (originally #1) are all 1.85 floating screens, so scope movies will be letterboxed, but I have also had very sharp and bright digital presentations in these auditoriums. #7 is flat sloped as it's the original smaller cinema in the 1974 section. Like with Scotiabank (noted below) the lighting in the auditoriums goes from full 100% brightness to zero when the movie starts, and the lights blast on immediately at the end, which I find very distracting. - NOT a fan of the VIP auditoriums. The rooms were renovated a few years ago and the curtains, masking and even seats have changed. None of this really makes for a "big screen" experience but can be pretty nice if it's not busy and you just want a quiet movie experience. Personally I'd go for a regular auditorium here. - Around the mid 2010s the Varsity was one of the first theatres to try out the middle few rows with extra wide leather (not recliner) seats for a few extra dollars, called "Prime Seats". This has been discontinued but the seats remain, so you can still book them for no extra charge. (EDIT: these seats may have been removed. They were still here on a visit a few years ago as the current seat maps don't appear to have them anymore). - Another Redditor mentioned this and can confirm that you can get to this theater either via Line 2 Bay Station (via Commerce Court) or Line 1/2 Bloor-Yonge station without going outside by walking through the Bay Centre and connect to Commerce Court then the Manulife Centre entrance. This is almost like a mini version of the PATH system! ------- Scotiabank Toronto: Now THIS is a megaplex! This is the main press & industry venue for TIFF and I have only been to a handful of regular screenings here. It's a big venue with that famous escalator and IMO has been well maintained over the years. My biggest peeve is that they changed all of the auditorium lighting and the lights BLAST on the second the end credits hit, which I find very distracting. - Despite what people think, IMAX is NOT the largest auditorium for seating in the complex. That honour goes to the mammoth #1 (559 seats) and AVX #2 (486 seats). AVX #2 used to be an exact mirror of #1. IMAX has 415 seats however, so it's third in capacity. - #3/4 are also huge (387 seats) and the other larger auditoriums are #11 (230 seats but large screen), #13 and #14 which are about 300 seats each. #5-9 are the small rooms roughly about 125-150 seats each, yet they do have nice screens. All screens have no masking and are 1.85 in size, which was pretty typical of most Famous Players builds of the time. - You can usually tell which theatres are which by loading the respective seat maps. #1 is easy to tell just by the very long and wide amount of seats. - Food options here vary. I found the popcorn disappointing and Outtakes pretty expensive and can be slow depending on what you order, but they DO have good coffee and cookies are 6 for $6, which is not bad for a cinema! - This would be the most "difficult" to access by transit from the three, and by that I mean a short walk from Osgoode or St. Andrew station, or jump off the Queen or King streetcar at John St. ------ One final note is that another Cineplex that I like on Line 1 is the Empress Walk location. It plays more foreign films, has great popcorn and coffee and a GIGANTIC lobby and view of the street from the lobby. This is another one you can access via the subway and not even having to go outside!

I have visited all three theaters, yet did not observe much of a difference. However, the Varsity theater stands out due to its smaller size, which seems to contribute to its cleaner and better-maintained condition. Unlike the other two theaters, where I noticed numerous broken seats and found the seating to be uncomfortable, the Varsity provides a more pleasant experience. Furthermore, it tends to attract fewer patrons owing to its smaller size, which might also contribute to its well-kept ambiance. I find the other two theatres are easier to get to by subway which I use a lot for transportation.
