Apple Design Executive Alan Dye Poached by Meta in Major Coup
Great news for Marco Arment. Honestly, I think this might be good news for Apple. Alan Dye makes things visually beautiful, but he’s not a good designer from a functional standpoint. This could be a blessing for Apple if it chooses the right successor. More on reddit.com

3 weeks ago - Why, for example, is it not one click to reply to a message in notification center? it used to be, but then Dye and his team decided we need "clean" design which meant instead now the thing I used to do a million times a day is like 3-4 clicks. ... He completely broke notifications UX on macOS. Each notification used to have nice big buttons you could press. Now they're relegated to a second or third click or a tiny disappearing 'x' button that isn't there half the time, and the other half the time I always miss and end up opening the app instead. So aggravating. ... Apple UIs have been getting worse for many years.

Just want advice on how to get in. I know its top tier, super competitive, super hard to even get an interview even with referrals. But if you could teach us all one thing or advice on what to work on maybe for side projects or skills to improve on to have a higher chance at being seen, that would be awesome.

Recruiting at Apple is very unique - in the sense that there really isn’t any documented process. Every team there has different processes and standards for hiring. General pattern I see is that they typically favor ex-agency designers; especially from the likes of Instrument, just as a broad example. Big agency names, working with massive brands. Very high bar for craft, storytelling, and advanced prototyping. Designers that can code are also highly valued. Lots of top Apple designers are actually closer to being design engineers or creative technologists.

If I were looking to work at any specific company I’d start by looking at the profiles of LinkedIn of people who have the job I want there. How do you currently stack up to where they were when they got the job? Look at where they went to school, where they worked before (company domain and location may matter) and what they did there. That will start to answer a lot of your questions.

October 22, 2024 - A product’s design is typically years in the making before a public launch. So while Ive’s direct guidance is likely no longer impacting modern products, that of Hankey, Tan, and others certainly is. But let’s consider some trends we’ve seen emerge in the years since Ive departed. At one point during Ive’s tenure, Apple was heavily focused on making its products thinner and lighter, with fewer ports.
