My macbook is connected to an Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, which has 1 HDMI port, 1 USB-A port, and 1 USB-C port for pass-through charging.
I use all those three ports on the Apple adapter, one for a 4k monitor, one for charging, and one for a USB-C hub, which has three USB-A ports and a SD card slot.
This is what my setup looks like.And I have been using a USB-A male to USB-C female adapter for the usb-c hub, and I have had no issue so far. But I recently found out that using a USB-A male to USB-C female adapter can potentially be dangerous.
So, I'm wondering if it is advisable to replace the USB-C hub with a USB-A hub, so that I don't have to use the adapter.

Not always. These are against spec because rhey can be used dangerously. If you use them correctly, then they're perfectly fine, and your setup is correct. The main thing to avoid is plugging a usb-c charger into one of these.
