I'm building a new system around this MB with a i9-14900K and a Samsung EVO 990 Pro 2TB. I've got an LG BluRay burner plugged into SATA#1 on the motherboard that I'm using just to install Windows 11.
On bootup, I can see that it sees the drive is listed on info screen the BIOS dumps out. If I go into the BIOS, the DVD drive and 990 are listed, but neither is listed as bootable (i.e. I cannot muck with the boot order).
Drive is physically installed in M_2, as I plan on installing a GTX 4090 once this gets up and running.
If I boot, it will ask to boot off the DVD, and I let it go. The 11 process starts to install. But it can't find any drive to install on! I plugged in the support USB stick that comes with the Dark Hero and browsed for a driver; I picked 1 of the 2 Windows 11 compatible drivers under RAID (because for some reason, the DVD drive and the 990 are listed under RAID on the BIOS screen).
I'm currently letting the 11 install run but I've never had this behavior in all my time of building PC's; fresh from the factory drives still showed up in boot order... Something doesn't feel right.
Thoughts? More info needed, happy to provide.

that's because you have the VMD controller enabled in the BIOS it acts like a RAID controller for both SATA and m.2 PCIe NVMe drives

Hello I am building a new PC with a 13900K and a Z790 ROG Maximus Hero. I noticed that on the BIOS and drivers page that it recommends the following:
“Before BIOS update, please download Intel ME update tool from ASUS support site, and update ME firmware to Version 16.1.25.2124 to ensure optimized system settings.”
The Intel ME driver states the following:
"Intel has identified security issue that could potentially place impacted platform at risk.
Use ME Update tool to update your ME.
*We suggest you update ME Driver to the latest Version 16.1.25.2124 simultaneously.
Please download the file and check the MD5 code first.

When do you do this? Is there a guide on how to update Intel ME before or during the BIOS firmware update? Also is the ME driver and the ME Update tool separate or does the update tool have the driver already? Sorry for the dumb questions I haven't build a PC in like 7 years.
Also is this update done in Windows or can you do this all through the BIOS?
What other drivers and firmware do I need to install to get the most out of my new system, do I need everything from the Asus drivers/ firmware page or just some of them?

From what I'm reading, the intel ME should be updated before the BIOS update. To verify MD5 hashes there is a built in command line tool certutil, or you can find a free GUI program to verify MD5 hashes. My rudimentary understanding of the intel management engine is that it's basically a black box software and hardware that's part of the system, it's not so much as something that requires a driver. It's more like a secondary small co-processor that has functions and features independent from the main system. So it doesn't require a driver, but they recommend to update its software before a bios update. I'm fairly certain that intel ME updates are done from windows, using a specific utility. (Sorry I don't have a specific guide) MD5 hashing or md5sum basically takes a whole file and reads it as binary data, runs it through an algorithm to generate a non reversible signature for the file to help verify that it is indeed unmodified from the original source. Because the owner of the file generated the md5 hash for it when they created it. If you experience problems with the drivers that windows pre-installs for your hardware, then it would be a good idea to get the ASUS drivers from their page. The ASUS driver page also will have software utilities specific to your motherboard, that will probably allow for fine tuning of motherboard features. But the utilities are usually not required to run the system, where as the ASUS drivers might be more necessary. If you open the device manager and it turns out that windows was unable to install the drivers for certain devices on your system, then the ASUS drivers are necessary. Right clicking each device and selecting properties will give you more information about where the drivers came from. Also device manager will give a warning flag or icon on each device that it wasn't able to recognize, or if there's a problem with it.

It’s a windows tool… so build PC install windows and then run the Intel ME tool to perform install. Once done then perform bios update using either bios usb… or bootable usb… I just did this on my ROG STRIX z790

So the problem I am having is the mobo comes with the drivers on thumb drive. I cant finish setting up windows without an internet connection and I can't connect to the internet because the drivers aren't installed via the thumb drive. I tried booting directly from the USB but that didn't work. Any ideas?

I hit F8 on startup and I click "SETUP" when I am promted and it just takes me to the bios every time. I tried enabling eufi, CMS and other-os nothing helps.
This is a new motherboard. I have tried two different thumb drives, one is official microsoft drive. Windows 10 Pro both.
What gives ?

huh!? doesn't SETUP means exactly that it sends you to the BIOS https://i.imgur.com/d7QaFbg.jpg you need to select the USB boot drive, not setup

Figured it out. Had to insert the thumb drive from the red port on the back. Previously had tried the front usb ports on the cabinet and one of the blue ports on the back. I also made sure UEFI was disabled and CMS enabled. I was concerned there for a while that they had removed the ability to install windows 10.
