Should I use Audacity?
People freaked out after Audacity was acquired and then released a verry poorly worded privacy policy. They later clarified, re-wrote the privacy policy and rolled out the limited telemetry (your basic PC specs, a small portion of your IP address and any info they need when you send them a crash report) as an opt out feature. It's still odd for a company like Muse to own it & it still be open source. Audacity has always been a bit of a toy - it's an audio editor. That design legacy still makes it rather clunky in the workflow department - particularly as it is trying to re-brand it's self closer to a real time DAW. If all you want are basic editing features? great. If you want to eventually do something more advanced start with the unlimited Reaper trial. More on reddit.com

I feel the same way about Audacity and it's terrible. I'm not sure how it even happened - how can an open source project be acquired by a company? But to answer your question: no, that was it. There isn't an alternative. That's what we have. I do the same as you, I just use older versions for my editing and samples. More on reddit.com

April 5, 2024Audacity - Why You Should Use it, and Some of the Basics
Audacity is a great application, though if you have a video editor (Sony Vegas/Adobe Premiere) that supports advanced filters like Noise Gates, Equalizers, and other options - I'd strongly recommend you use those over Audacity. I say this because you can literally cut out the middle-man and drag and drop your clips into the editor. Once the clips are dropped in - bam! All the required tweaking/Noise Removal/Equalization and other effects are added on the fly with so little as a click for you to do. If I was still in the business of using Audacity, I'd have to split the audio from my video, apply each effect sequentially (or use a macro), then export the track out back into my video. As of late, all audio editing is now is dropping my clips in and cutting my videos to length. Also: Linked this article in the audio quality tutorial under User-Submitted info. More on reddit.com

What you're doing is building a house using a plain old hammer and saw. It can be done, and theoretically it could end up as good as anyone could build it. But honestly, you'd be making your life a lot easier if you just learned to use a couple power tools. A DAW looks complicated because it has a lot of specialized features for doing both common and uncommon tasks for music creation. Those features mean less manual work for you, which means that once you learn to use them, you can spend more time actually making music. What will make your music sound better is simply being able to spend more time on the music itself, rather than working around your editor's limitations. Audacity certainly has a place in the world, but if you've been recording music for seven years you've probably outgrown that place. More on reddit.com

Hello everyone,
I am currently on the fence of working on Audacity or not. I was recently gifted a mic and wanted to have fun recording audio and practicing voice acting and singing. I instantly thought of using audacity for voice editing, but after some research I saw that there where mixed opinions of whether audacity is safe. How data is collected while using audacity. I want to broaden my thoughts. What are all of you guys thoughts? is audacity safe in your opinion? Is it worth learning to edit audio with this software? or should I look in to another way to edit audio?

I am specifically seeking suggestions for audio editing software, distinct from digital audio workstations (DAWs).
I've been a long time user of Audacity. It has been my go-to audio editor for many years. I've observed what I perceive as a notable decline in its functionality and stability since its acquisition by Muse Group. It appears that there is a shift towards transforming it into a software resembling GarageBand, which is not what I need.
Linux already has several excellent DAWs, and I don't see Audacity replacing them. On the other hand, Audacity became the de-facto audio editor for Linux, but it now seems to be in the process of being repurposed as a front-end for muse group's on-line services. What I need is a really good audio editor.
I am currently using Audacity 2.4.2, which does everything I need. However, given its age and lack of maintenance, I am exploring alternatives that offer similar functionality and reliability. I have a strong preference for open source.
