Yes, it had one of the best detection rates in recent independent testing by reputed AV-Comparatives. As well as a low positive rate. It's owned by the same company that owns Norton, Avast, and AVG. Whether you like the software is a different issue. More on reddit.com

Avira has a good AV engine. It’s not great, other AVs beat it, but it’s AV engine is good. Avira is like Windows Defender in the way that it’s cloud sample uploading happy and in Avira’s case that’s good because the Avira cloud engine catches something like 99.99% of malware samples uploaded to it. The thing is that like all cloud scanners, it has an upload cap size. If a person downloads a massive file that is 99.99% padding and only a tiny fraction of the file is malware, Avira’s cloud scanner won’t attempt to upload it, meaning the AV is forced to rely on it’s traditional AV engine, which currently tests at mid-tear at best. Unfortunately Avira’s behavioral monitoring is relatively weak, meaning malware can definitely bypass it. If sticking 100% to free AV engines, Bitdefender’s AV engine is higher rated and does not rely on the cloud nearly as much as Avira. Avira free AV with a secondary behavioral protector like paid HitmanPro.Alert would likely be very good protection. The problem is those massive file downloads that some people are scammed into downloading and running and since Avira will not cloud scan those files, they become incredibly hard to stop. My dad has always bought a AV software for my brother, himself and me and he just renewed his Avira Prime for another year. All 5 licenses are used, my desktop (windows) is safe, but I wanted to secure my laptop (MacBook) and phone (iPhone) as well. So I did a little Googling and check Reddit and noticed that this sub does not seem to like Avira. But when I google Avira it seems mostly positive.
So I was I was wondering if Avira prime is really that bad? Or if it is just that the free version sucks because of the advertisements or if it's a bad product all around?
And I was wondering what to maybe use instead for my apple products. I read bad things about Bitdefender when I google it, but you guys seem to love it.

Regularly, I'll get the large popup on the bottom right of my screen advertising Avira Antivirus Pro for cheap. Today, it's $1. Why do they keep putting it on such a sale? Is there a catch? Is the Pro version worth switching to?

I've been using it for a while and haven't had any issues with Avira. The pro version gives you some extra features (USB scanning and some maintenance feature) but doesn't really "enhance" detection, so if you're content with the free version, you can definitely stick to it.
