What has your experience with "reserved instances" been?
We run quarterly assessments to figure out how many instances are running 24x7, and then further break that down to understand the long term strategy for those particular systems / platforms. If we expect it to be on more than 7 months, we buy an RI for it. We have a lot of traditional on premises platforms that have mostly lifted and shifted into the cloud, so RIs make a ton of sense for us. Likewise, even more elastic and scaling platforms still have minimum baseline compute running at all times and use auto scaling to scale up during peak periods. It still makes sense to buy RIs for those systems, as there’s always X running 24x7. Managing them isn’t too hard. Once you buy them, it’s set and forget until the next quarterly review. RIs don’t tie to a specific instance, so even if we decommission a platform earlier than expected, we can shut those instances down and use the RIs on other systems that were more recently spun up and not covered. We use cloudhealth to do this mostly automatic for us. They provide RI recommendations, we look them over and act accordingly. We have roughly $2m a year in spend and RIs helped us cut that down to about $1.2m effectively overnight. We do 1 year no up front exclusively. More on reddit.com
I thought I understood Reserved Instances but clearly not - halp!
Reservations, like savings plans, are a billing abstraction. In this case, you are committing to pay for a specific instance size, in a specific instance family, in an AZ or Region, in exchange for a discount. You do not have any assurance that you will actually be able to spin up that kind of instance however. Reservations also have some amount of flexibility, but upwards. For example, if you purchase 2 m3.large reservations, they will primarily apply to 2 running m3.large instances. If none are running, it will try to apply against a running m3.xlarge instance. Reservations are more limiting than savings plans and I would personally preference savings plans for their flexibility. More on reddit.com

AWS Reserved Instances Explained: Know Exactly How They Work—and Why They Matter
Convertible RIs (often a point of confusion when comparing AWS Reserved Instances vs Savings Plans as well): Standard Reserved Instances: These offer the highest discounts off the On-Demand price (the most cost savings). In exchange for that bigger discount, Standard RIs are the least flexible after you buy them. A Standard RI cannot be exchanged for a different configuration – once you pick an instance type, platform, etc., you’re locked into that for the term.

September 9, 2021 -
Hi all, i had some questions before we commit to one year payment upfront for our ec2 servers.
can we change instance type?
can we move it to another aws account (under the same organisation of course and it doesn't have to be the exact same ec2, we can rebuild it, we just want to keep the same price).
what about if we need to switch Availability zone (but keep the same region)
Thank you very much!

I would advise against using RI, it is not flexible at all, you buy RI for specific OS+instance type+region. Those needs change over time and you also need to have always in mind what you have in RI available before to spin up new instances. We had a 3 years RI commitment, by the last year or usage of RIs was down to less than 50% since our needs changed (in os, region and types) there is a really complicated way to exchange RIs, it takes a lot of time and analysis to figure it out. Go with Savings Plans, it is very flexible and it also covers more areas of compute such as Lambda and Fartgate, we are now at 100% usage of our Savings plans. Only 5% of our total Compute usage is now outside the SP, due to growth, but we can now go back and optimize our usage. can we change instance type? You can exchange RIs but it is not straightforward. We had to work on this for a couple weeks with our aws support, hope you are paying premium support or it will be a worse nightmare. can we move it to another aws account (under the same organisation of course and it doesn't have to be the exact same ec2, we can rebuild it, we just want to keep the same price). You should buy the RIs from your master account and there you set them to be used at any account under it. what about if we need to switch Availability zone (but keep the same region) the restriction is just for region, switching AZ is Ok.

AWS Reserved Instances: Pros/Cons, Types & Use Cases
May 20, 2025 - Predictable costs and savings enable better budget management and financial planning—key components of any effective AWS FinOps strategy. On-demand instances allow organizations to pay for compute capacity by the hour or second (depending on the instance type) with no long-term commitments. This provides the flexibility to scale up or down as needed. On the flip side, on-demand resources are the most expensive way to operate instances. Reserved instances require a commitment to use a specific instance type in a chosen region for either one or three years, in exchange for a lower rate.
