r/ASUS on Reddit: B550M-A Bios Flash Button?
April 14, 2022 -

New computer will not boot up - mobo is getting power, but nothing happens. Have swapped out all monitors/cords to see if that was the problem, but still nothing. My research leads me to believe that I need to update my Bios (Ryzen 5 5600G) but all the steps I can find tell me to use the Bios USB port or Flash button and I have no button and all my usb ports appear identical. I have the correct file on my usb, I have tried multiple usb drives and formats, and still nothing. All the ASUS support I find is based on using the menu functions or F2, but I can’t even get that far.

Anything I’m missing?

I'm changing out from my 6600k to move into a R5 5600x on the b550M-a board but I can't find any definitive info on just this board about the flashback feature, could the bios possibly be outdated to where it does not support the 5000 series? Paranoid as this is my first time using amd's platforms.

r/buildapc on Reddit: BIOS flashback on ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-PLUS
January 2, 2021 -

So yesterday I finished my build with an ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-PLUS and a Ryzen 5 5600X. I turned it on, everything lit up and the all the fans were spinning but my monitor didn't get any signal. I tried it without the GPU but again i got no signal. After some research i figured that i have to flash the MOBO BIOS with a USB-stick, so i tried that but it doesn't seem to work. I downloaded the latest BIOS, renamed it with the rename-application that comes with the download, put it on the BIOS USB-port and pressed the button for three seconds. The light flashes three times, then stays on but nothing happens. I don't know what to do now, do i have to unplug all the devices for the BIOS flashback and just connect the MOBO to the PSU or is there something else to do?

r/buildapc on Reddit: ASUS TUF B550M PLUS BIOS Flashback Issues
November 15, 2020 -

Hello guys,

I'm at the end of my knowledge at that moment and hoping to get some help.

I've build a new PC with a Ryzen 5800x and an ASUS B550M Plus (wifi) mainboard, already knowing i would have to update the bios, where the flashback ability should kick in.

On the first boot, since there was no sticker indicating what bios version is maybe already installed, I've come just until the first splash screen, which tells me to press DEL or F2. I could press the buttons, but nothing happened.

So I started the flashback process as described:

  1. Download the bios.

  2. Unpack and rename it with the "utility" to the right name.

  3. Copy the renamed bios file to a FAT32 formatted USB drive.

  4. Plugged that stick in.

  5. Pressed the BIOS flashback button, which blinked three times as it supposed to do.

  6. LED stopped blinking and was a solid green for over 30 min.

  7. Dont know what to do now.

So im hoping for a little bit of help on that matter.

Edit: I was too sleepy to read everything correctly. I've got the WiFi version and downloaded the non WiFi version. After I for the right bios, it flashed itself within two minutes.

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: Tips for B550 Tomahawk Bios Flashback
January 6, 2021 -

I was able to update my MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK using BIOS Flashback for my Ryzen 5 5600X.

At first, I'm getting a Solid Red Light a few seconds after I pressed the Flash BIOS Button, so I assumed that the flash wasn't a success or it didn't continue. I googled for possible solutions found out that I am using the wrong partition table for my USB DRIVE.

Please see these steps :

  1. Make sure it is a 32GB or below USB drive because Windows won't allow you to format a partition larger than 32GB to FAT32. Don't do anything yet! (In my case I used a Jetflash Transcend 8GB).

  2. Delete the volume of the USB drive in Disk Management. Right-click Delete Volume.

  3. Convert your USB drive to MBR using CMD (BIOS won't flash if you are using GPT). https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/change-a-gpt-disk-into-an-mbr-disk

  4. Go back to Disk Management and select again the drive. Right-click New Simple Volume and click Next until Finish.

  5. Now format the USB drive to FAT32.

  6. Download the Latest Beta or Latest Stable Bios (I used 7C91vA51(Beta version) for my B550 Tomahawk).

  7. Rename the file to MSI.ROM

  8. Copy MSI.ROM to your USB Drive.

  9. Now, connect the 24pin and 8pin power to your motherboard and plug it. Make sure the PSU is turned on.

  10. Insert the drive into the USB 2.0 Port (with gray outline) just below the Bios Flashback Button.

  11. Press the Flash BIOS Button using a Pen or a Screw Driver and wait for a few sec to start.

  12. Blinking Red Lights (USB 2.0 Port) and RGB Lights (around B550 Chipset Heatsink) means that your motherboard's bios is currently updating. IF YES, PROCEED TO STEP 14.

  13. Steady Red Light (USB 2.0 Port) and NO RGB Lights around the B550 Chipset Heatsink means the motherboard is NOT updating. IF YES, YOU NEED TO REPEAT STEP 1.

  14. Wait until the Blinking Red Lights stops. The RGB lights around the chipset will not turn off and that is completely fine (Wait 5-10 minutes just to make sure).

  15. Remove the USB drive and Turn off the Power Supply.

  16. Install every part needed to boot your CPU (Processor, Ram, GPU, Cooler & Etc).

  17. TEST IF SUCCESS!

I hope this will help people having trouble updating their BIOS.

September 18, 2023 - I have to start this post off by setting things up. My setup was a Ryzen 7 3700X on an MSI MAG B550M Mortar motherboard, Powercolor RX 6700 XT. It was running fine, until yesterday morning, I noticed that the stock AMD Wraith Prism had given up the ghost. Luckily I had set the RGB's to show the CPU temp, instead of just color cycling like everything else.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Does the Asrock B550M Pro4 Have Bios Flashback?
April 6, 2024 -

Planning to build a PC later this year and I'm set on Asrock B550M Pro4 and Ryzen 5 5600 as my CPU/mobo combo. As I go to pcpartpicker, it says that it is incompatible because the Asrock b500m pro4 doesn't support the r5 5600 out of the box due to the bios being outdated. Although I read through the documentation it says that it has instant flash which is some form of bios flashback but one Reddit post I saw says otherwise. Should I be worried?

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: MSI B550M Mortar BIOS completely bricked, Flash BIOS Button won't recover it — looking for advice
December 5, 2025 -

Hi everyone. I'm dealing with a serious BIOS brick on my MSI MAG B550M Mortar (MS-7C94) and I'm hoping someone who has been through this can point me in the right direction.

Background
I bought the board in November 2022 and it has always worked fine. Recently I attempted a BIOS update, and something went wrong. After that, the system began powering on with fans spinning, but there was no display output and the CPU debug LED stayed on.

Flash BIOS Button attempts
I followed every official and unofficial guide for MSI's Flash BIOS recovery:

  • Used a Kingston USB drive

  • Cleaned it with DiskPart, set it to MBR

  • Created a small FAT16/FAT32 partition (~100 MB)

  • Placed only the BIOS file renamed as MSI.ROM in the root

  • Plugged it into the white Flash BIOS USB port

  • Pressed the Flash BIOS Button with the system powered off but the PSU switched on

The LED on the Flash BIOS Button always starts blinking uniformly, which indicates the board does detect and read MSI.ROM. However, it never progresses beyond that point. It never changes blink pattern, never slows down or speeds up, and it never finishes. I left one attempt running for two hours without success.

BIOS versions tested
I tried multiple versions to see if any would initiate a proper write:

  • Latest version: 7C94v1M

  • Version close to my board’s manufacturing period: 7C94v1D (August 2022)

  • Earlier versions: 7C94v1A, 7C94v19

The behavior is identical across all of them:
The board recognizes MSI.ROM (LED blinks), but the SPI chip never actually starts the writing phase.

Deep reset attempt
I also performed a full deep reset:

  • Removed CPU, RAM, GPU, SSDs

  • Removed the CMOS battery

  • Drained all capacitors by holding the power button

  • Reconnected only the 24-pin and 8-pin EPS connectors

  • Tried Flash BIOS again on a bare motherboard

No change. The LED still blinks uniformly forever.

Current conclusion
Based on the consistent behavior across multiple BIOS versions and multiple recovery attempts, it looks like the SPI flash chip is in a corrupted or locked state in which it can read MSI.ROM but cannot begin the writing process. The Flash BIOS Button hardware appears functional, but the chip itself does not accept writes anymore.

Next step
From what I’ve researched, the only reliable solution at this point is reprogramming the BIOS chip directly using a CH341A programmer and SOIC8 clip.

Before ordering one, I wanted to ask:
Has anyone seen this specific issue with MSI B550 boards? Should I attempt any particular intermediate BIOS versions, or is the CH341A approach the only realistic fix now?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
