What's the joke about the song "I Write the Songs that Make the Whole World Sing"?
The joke is that Beach Boy Bruce Johnston wrote the song and multiple artists recorded and released it within a short span of time. The song came out in 1975, but was released by Captain and Tennille. A few months later, David Cassidy released this song. And a few months after that, Barry Manilow released the song at the end of the year. So 3 versions of the same song were released within one year. In 1977, original writer, Bruce Johnston, released his version of the song. The only version to become a huge hit was Manilow's. By the late 80s, when this eppy of Full House was recorded, everyone was sick of this song- yet no one would let it die. It was a joke for the parents watching who lived through this era. TIL that Barry Manilow didn't write his huge 1977 hit "I Write the Songs". It was actually a cover of a song first recorded by The Captain and Tenille, written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys.

The Old Songs by Barry Manilow - Songfacts
He and I got together, we wrote six songs together at that time, and 'The Old Songs' was one of them. We had written it for Jennifer Warnes - she must have passed on it. I had recorded it on my Atlantic album, and Barry had heard my album, heard the song, and then decided that he would record it, too.

1 week ago - Manilow released the self-titled Barry (1980), which was his first album to not reach the top ten in the United States, stopping at number 15. The album contained the top 10 hits "I Made It Through the Rain" (originally a minor hit for its writer, Gerard Kenny) and "Bermuda Triangle". The album If I Should Love Again followed in 1981, with two top 40 recordings that both hit number 1 on the AC chart—"The Old Songs" and "Somewhere Down The Road"—and a third single that became a hit in the UK, a cover of the 1965 The Four Seasons smash "Let's Hang On!".
