does your mattress have a return or comfort policy and are you still within that window?? when you’re in pain, sometimes it’s worth looking at a replacement rather than just trying to cover it up. a topper can help in the right situation. since you said your mattress is too firm, a soft topper could cradle your body and take some of the pressure off. they work best at softening, not the other way around. what’s your normal sleep position? side sleepers generally need the most plush cushioning, back sleepers do well with something a little more balanced, and stomach sleepers usually need a thinner layer so they don’t sink too far in. I like this one only because it has breathable cotton on top and despite the filling it doesnt turn lumpy/overheated. in case you’re unsure exactly how soft you need, it helps to test toppers in person. some stores will have latex, foam, or pillow-top styles out on display. height and weight make a difference too: on a thinner topper you might bottom out, while a thicker or plusher one gives you more sink. i’ve found that testing a couple in person is the fastest way to figure out whether a 2" or 3" style actually feels like a hotel bed. if in-person isn’t possible, at least look for a brand with a trial or solid return policy, that way you’re not stuck if it doesn’t match what you had in mind.

I have decided to purchase a memory foam mattress topper to help support me when I sleep (I'm about 230-240 lbs and a side or back sleeper with some back problems).
Although my mattress was comfortable when I first bought it I just need something to help distribute my weight evenly so I don't wake up with sore hips.
I've read conflicting things about topper depth. Some people say that 3 inches isn't going to be supportive for long enough for someone heavier. And other people have said that 4 inches "folds like a taco" when you sleep on it and you can't move.
Anyone have any experience or insight to add. I don't mind having to flip/rotate it every so often and replace it in a couple of years. I'd prefer that to being unable to sleep comfortably right off the bat. But I want to make sure it will support my back and hips.
