Welding student here, so far I've been only using 4.5-5 In grinders. Part of me what's to get one of those Milwaukee 7-9inch grinders, just something so appealing to the size. But how truly useful is one? Do you professionals use them regularly?

They are unmatched when you’ve got a lot of metal to remove/prep, what kind of grinding are you encountering in your schooling? They’re big, heavy, extra loud, the consumables are expensive, and they throw a hefty stream of sparks a pretty long distance so it’s worth considering how that affects your classmates as well……but if you’re prepping long seams or needing to knock down a long bead so that it’s flush a large grinder will make the work go much faster

I noticed you seemingly can't get mortar discs for 9" grinders, but you could use a general masonry disc for the same job

I was gonna just use my 4 1/2 inch angle grinder but I suppose to be safe it's probably better to buy a larger angle grinder, many of which can use both 7 and 9 inch blades. Would 9 inch be the best option considering that seems close to the 10 inch grinder on machines rented from Home Depot that cost $200 for a day, which is enough to just buy the large ange grinder and a diamond disk. Most examples I've come across seem to be using the 7 inch disk though. Which would be better for epoxy flooring a garage?

Better is really a question of time. At the end of the day, they'll do the same job. One will just take longer than the other, especially if you're doing a large area. That said, if you've never done this before, I will mention that the 4 inch will be much easier to control. The bigger grinder will weigh more and have more power so it will be much easier to mess up and grind down more than you wanted. Remember that the floor needs to be flat at the end. Any deep grooves left behind by the grinder will be visible at the end. If you're not in a hurry, and it's your first time, I recommend the 4 inch and take your time with it. If you already have the larger angle grinder and disc, start in a place you won't mind not being perfect to get used to it. You can touch up any grooves with the 4 inch later if you mess up anything. Also, there's going to be MASSIVE dust, make sure you wear goggles and a respirator! Last tip...knee pads!! Good luck! Have fun! It's worth it!

7”/9” grinder with 7” diamond cupwheel and dustshroud. Bigger cupwheel will have less tendency to gouge because more surface area. Also will be much quicker. I have never seen a 9” cupwheel. If you are only planning on grinding your garage once just use what you have and give your tool breaks so it doesn’t overheat. The smaller hand grinders tend to overheat. Also make sure to use a dust shroud with proper hepa vac, dust is very fine. so if using a low quality shopvac use a dust bag and hepa filter. bucket cyclone separator will help too.
