I know we're all skeptical about Wirecutter, and I'm doubly skeptical that all of their top printer, laser printer, and scanner suggestions are HP. I've had enough personal experience with HP and seen enough comments here to know... never again.

The main mention here in BIFL always appears to be Brother. I know printers aren't really BIFL by definition, but I was hoping for some recommendations.

I don't need to print often, but I don't want a printer that's going to be a PITA with ink replacements or drying out. I was thinking of a laser printer this time around, and ideally one that can also scan documents.

Are most of my options going to be black and white only? Does anyone have a personal recommendation?

Hi, I hate my HP, so so much and I need a new one.

I went with Brother printers since they are apperently immortal and I've only heard good things about them.

Some features that are important to me are:

  • be a laser printer

  • solid B&W printing

  • have a scanner

  • wireless connectivity

The MFC-L2835DW seems like a good choice but is quite expensive for me, being a lowly college student with not many funds to my name.

So I wanted to check if maybe someone has a cheaper alternative.

Thanks in advance :)

Tired of my HP constantly eating through ink cartridges on every print job, not to mention the cloud-connected nonsense. Are Brother color laser printers (with scanner bed) still the best solution for me? I want the big capacity of toner cartridges, and not the silly cloud connectedness.

I’ve been using the Brother MFC-J4335DW as my go-to home printer, and it’s been a solid workhorse for everything from school assignments to scanning and copying documents. What I like most is how well it balances performance and value, it’s not outrageously expensive, but it still delivers where it counts. The page yield is great for a cartridge-based model, and I’ve been getting over 2,000 black prints per cartridge, which means I’m not constantly running out of ink.

Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-MFC-J4335DW-INKvestment-Wireless-Printing/dp/B0FGCCWV6T/

Print quality is consistently sharp, especially for black-and-white documents, and while color output isn’t the most vibrant I’ve seen, it’s definitely good enough for casual photo prints or charts. It’s fast, too, no waiting around forever to get a couple pages out. I also appreciate how reliable the automatic document feeder is when I need to scan a batch of pages, though it doesn’t scan both sides automatically, which can be a little tedious when I’m dealing with double-sided documents.

One of the other things that’s stood out is the low cost per print. For everyday use, whether it's printing homework, recipes, or travel confirmations, the savings really add up over time. It connects easily over Wi-Fi and works seamlessly with both my laptop and phone, so printing from anywhere in the house is a breeze.

Overall, the Brother MFC-J4335DW has been a dependable and efficient choice for home use. It’s not perfect, color could be better and duplex scanning would be nice, but for a budget-friendly all-in-one, it’s been more than worth it.

I have a HP inkjet all in one printer and it’s stopped working, hates it anyway.

I’ve been recommended to get a brother laser, only need b+w print, but I need a scanner too, which one is going to be best, don’t want to repeat the subscription problems of HP again!

I'm gona sound like a boomer but, I don't need an app, I don't need ANY subscription service (fuck you HP), and I need to print both over the network (wifi not hardline) and by physical hook up. What have you guys heard on the topic of printers?

Hi everyone!

Im currently in the market to find a good all-in-one printer.

I'm extremely frustrated and done with HP. They locked my printer because I unsubcribed to their ink plan and they refuse to let me print and keep trying to upsell me on crap I dont need.

I would please prefer a brother printer. Ive heard lots of good things about this brand and would like to give it a try. Im pretty felxable but requirements that im looking for is double sided printing, scan to email, and good photo quality so I can print some cool detailed stickers eventually. Any recommendations? Thank you all for your help in advance!! 🙏

You can't really have auto duplex and photos with entry level printer. Brother does not have good offering for photos printers. Double sided printing is usually not a thing that comes with printers focused on photos like the canon G5XX/G6XX series (3 digits not 4). However, if you are printing something just good enough and not almost pro level. I would recommend canon G6XXX Series. However if you want to print for something to sell and has some sale value, with printing media that does not accept pigmented ink, with double-sided printing. There is only the Epson 8500/8550(with ink tank)(but you should not be using it for printing documents, only photos/stickers, because it's ink cost is a lot higher, because it is a pro level ink). Anyway what i really recommend is. Canon G6XXX series for general use. Canon G6XX Series for photos only. You can't have both worlds in the same printer. Edit: If you don't need automatic duplex printing, then epson ET 2800 is perfect for both entry level photos, and documents, it's ink is cheaper... However, it can leave deeper roller marks on some types of photo papers, as it is not designed as a photo printer(same as the G6XXX series). But the type of ink that it uses, can work in all types of papers (unless is paper for laser printer).

Brother is a good brand, but most people recommending brother are doing so for their laser printers. Their inkjet printers are less known, and usually Epson or canon are recommended way above that. Epson being the earliest one offering a tank system so they have their fan base, and canon is known in general for their photo and art printers.

This is for my parents who are older. I’m looking to purchase an all in one printer. The hinge on our current one broke, so the top is not sealing properly and causing black streaks when making copies (open to ideas on how to fix this too).

We only use it a couple times a month at most. The internet says a laser printer is ideal in that case, but we haven’t dealt with our ink cartridges drying out. There are so many options out there, it’s a bit overwhelming. Sites recommend the same HP printers over and over, but I’m hearing various things about HP handles ink cartridges.

Desired Specs:

  • Printer, copier, scanner capability

  • Feeder tray for multiple pages (are there machines that do double sided at my desired price?)

  • Black and white only is fine, I don’t remember the last time we wanted to print color

  • Fits under/around a desk

  • Ideally under $200ish

  • User friendly

The following printers, for example, seem very similar, so the deciding factor could be brand-related (quality reputation, warranty support, customer service, ink price strategy, etc.).

  • Canon Color imageCLASS MF733Cdw

  • Brother MFC-L3770CDW

Well I don't have any experience with these 2 models, but I have had experience with other brother and canon models.

I had a customer who purchased a B&W Laser Brother AIO and the only issue he had with it is he had to change the toner quite frequently.

He was a tax preparer who printed many pages per day.

I had to help him change the drum unit a few times as well.

The toner snapped into the drum unit and the whole assembly slid into the printer.

You need to take care not to touch certain parts on the toner / drum unit otherwise the pages will have smears / lines in the output.

We learned that the hard way lol.

I checked the toner for both units.

You can get compatible toner for each of the models for around $60 for a 4pack which includes black, cyan, magenta, yellow.

I have had software issues with canon printers in the past, but very rarely with brother.

That's just my 2c.

Hope it helps.

It is not a question of who makes the best printer. That is very much an opinion based on subjection and will change from person to person. The question is who makes the best printer FOR YOU. This question can be answered with objectionable and measurable material such as printer specs.

For us to accurately suggest one model or the other we need to know what your printing requirements are. To do that please see our Wiki article on requesting purchasing advice:

https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/wiki/purchasingadvice

Give us as much information as you can and then we will suggest one printer or another to you. Feel free to repost your request with the template if you would like more exposure.

So I'm looking for a black and white, all-in-one, home office laser printer. First laser printer purchase in many years; I had an HP workhorse laser printer from the 80s that ran flawlessly (bought cases of paper several times a year) up until the 2000s. These days I'm looking at maybe 20-40 pages a week, but who knows what my future needs may be, so I still want something now that would be able to do a few hundred a week in the future (yes, I know the Golden Age of small HP laser printers that could pump out a hundred thousand pages without any maintenance is long over).

So far research says the B&W Brother laser all-in-ones are the most reliable. I'm looking at this one https://www.walmart.com/ip/Brother-HL-L2390DW-Monochrome-Laser-Printer-with-Convenient-Flatbed-Copy-Scan-Duplex-Printing-and-Wireless-Connectivity/704369497 right now: it's literally the only Brother I can find in stock anywhere, unless I want to pay twice MSRP on Amazon while buying from a sketchy Seller there. The $253 is more than I really want to spend, but since the chip shortage has been jacking up prices all over, I feel like it's the best I'll do unless I want to get on every retailers waiting email list and wait for a few months, and I really want a printer now. (On the other hand, maybe buying a cheap inkjet for now and waiting until the shortage ends would end up the smart move?)

But I'm worried about the cost of toner cartridges. Using Brother cartridges, the cost per page is close to 5 cents. The aftermarket Brother cartridges I see on Amazon universally have a whole lot of bad reviews. And it looks like Brother has joined with the others by pushing out firmware updates that prevent customers from even using third party cartridges now. (I don't mind doing some technical tinkering to block updates, but I have to believe that the third party cartridge blocking firmware comes with the printers now - or do the aftermarket suppliers just update their chips once a block is pushed out, in an endless game of Whack-A-Mole with the printer makers?)

Bottom Line: reliability is priority one, followed by toner cost. Any advice or shared experiences will be appreciated.

So I'm ready to trash my POS Canon MF 4350. Constantly jamming, low quality scans, and such poor design that clearing jams, it can kill two hours easily.

Any recommendation on a RELIABLE printer/scanner? Model name/number would be appreciated.

I read on another thread that Brothers are reliable.

Hello! I am a senior in college and in need of buying a printer. I hope to be a teacher after graduation, so I would want to spend on a pretty good one. I have seen reviews about Epson and Brother printers, but honestly can't decide which one is best. Does anyone have any recommendations?
