Best College Student Credit Cards of January 2026 - NerdWallet
November 14, 2025 - It’s ideal to avoid an annual fee when you're on a student budget. In addition to keeping costs low, a no-annual-fee card makes it easier to keep an account open once you build enough credit to move on to better credit cards. Without an annual fee, you can keep your original credit card open to keep the length of your credit history and benefit your credit score. Cards designed for people new to credit tend to have higher interest rates, so it's best to pay your bill in full each month, which allows you to avoid paying interest entirely.

Can international students get a credit card in Canada?

International students who want a Canadian credit card must first obtain a Social Insurance Number from Service Canada. You can only get your social insurance number (SIN) if you are authorized to work while attending school. With your SIN, many of the big banks (e.g. Scotiabank, CIBC, and BMO) will extend $1,000 worth of credit for students who have recently arrived in Canada. TD will only approve a secured card application. MBNA and Tangerine required a form of Canadian ID, such as a drivers license.

How do student credit cards work?

They work like most other credit cards. You use them to purchase goods and services, and pay back your credit balance monthly. You can earn rewards or cash back on purchases based on the card you’ve chosen. Plus, you can use your student credit card for cash advances if you have available credit.

Our student friendly credit cards are generally easier to qualify for as a student compared to other credit cards and offer a great way to start building credit history.

To avoid interest charges, you should pay your credit balance in full by your statement date. Note that you will be charged interest for a cash advance starting the day the advance is made. You may also be charged an additional fee for a cash advance.

How to choose the best student credit card in Canada
June 20, 2025 - Student-friendly options typically waive these fees or keep them minimal to help you save. Interest is a key factor when choosing a credit card. If you don’t pay off your balance in full each month, the remaining amount is subject to interest based on the card’s Annual Percentage Rate (APR). In Canada, this typically ranges from 19.99% to 29.99%. Even a small unpaid balance can accrue significant interest over time. For example, a card with a 19.99% APR charges about 0.000548% per day.
