Can I have more than one travel credit card?

Yes, you can hold multiple travel credit cards at once, and many Canadians do. Having more than one card can help you maximize rewards across different spending categories (for example, one card for groceries and dining, another for gas and travel) or take advantage of different loyalty programs. However, it’s important to manage them responsibly: pay off balances in full, keep track of annual fees, and avoid applying for too many cards in a short period, as that can temporarily lower your credit score.

Do travel credit card rewards expire?

Travel credit card rewards can expire with most airline or hotel loyalty programs having a defined 12 to 24 month expiry date. The good news is that this only applies if there has been no account activity during that time. It can be wise to consider getting a credit card that will continue to earn you points for your preferred airline or hotel, preventing your account from being inactive.

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Best travel credit card
December 27, 2023 -

Hello, I know there have been a bunch of posts on travel credit cards in Canada and though helpful, some recommendations did not provide lounge access.

I am looking for a credit card that banks points that I can redeem for booking flights (I would prefer to not be bonded to a certain airline so aeroplan cards are out) and lounge access.

I read certain cards with lounge access get denied. Can someone provide clarity on that? Do all Canadian banks provide flight and hotel bookings through Expedia? Anything with booking.com or other platforms? I generally book either thru Google flights or skyscanner

The cards I'm looking at are

  1. CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Card

  2. Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card

  3. BMO Ascend World Elite MasterCard

  4. TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite

Are there any other better cards that provide points and lounge access? I'm currently with CIBC on a student dividend card and want to either upgrade or get a new card.

Lounge access and getting cheap/free flights are generally mutually exclusive, so you'll need two cards to get both. Amex cobalt is the best travel points card in Canada because MR points can be transferred 1:1 to aeroplan (and also other airlines, including British airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, Air France-KLM, and Etihad). On a highly conservative 1.5 cents per point Aeroplan/Avios point valuation, that gives you a 1.5% base, 3% travel bookings/gas/transit, 4.5% streaming, 7.5% groceries/all foods and drinks earn rate. You can also use amex's fixed points travel program (which would usually give you a lower redemption value than transferring to airline loyalty programs), and also redeem points for statement credits at 1 cent per point, making it a 1-5% cashback card. 15k MR/AP welcome bonus, don't forget the $100 third party cash rebate cobalt has on top of Amex's welcome bonus Scotia passport VI is meanwhile the best for travel perks, offering no fx fees and 6 dragonpass lounge passes. Terrible earn rate of 1% base, 2% entertainment/dining/other grocers/transit, 3% empire chain grocers. Okay welcome bonus of 25k scene/$250 + $125 third party cash rebate too. The best non-amex alternative for cobalt would be MBNA rewards WEMC. It earns 5x-5.5x on "digital media, memberships, and utilities"; groceries and restaurants, 1x-1.1x everything else. 10% birthday bonus on all pts earned in past 12 mths up to 10k, which is where the 5.5x return comes from. Points can be redeemed as statement credits against travel at 1cpp, as general statement credits at 0.83cpp, or (in the future) be transferred 1:1 to alaska miles. Good welcome bonus too of 30k pts + $80 third party cash rebate

In my opinion AMEX Cobalt better than all of those you listed.

Travel Credit Card Recommendation
The only decent travel credit card in Canada is the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card. It is the only card that offers decent travel benefits and no FX fees. There are other cards that offer slightly better benefits, but you will lose out a lot more on FX fees. Also, in the case of AmEx, you may find that it is not accepted everywhere you want to use your card. There are also, likewise, a couple of other payment cards that don't charge FX fees, such as the WealthSimple cash card, but they do not offer travel benefits. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card is the only one that has the whole package. More on reddit.com

Best Credit Card for Travel in 2025
Scotiabank has great travel cards, so I don't see a reason to switch. Their Passport Visa Infinite gives solid travel insurance, lounge passes, and no foreign transaction fees. I had a flight delayed once and used the card's insurance to pay for my hotel and food; I was fully reimbursed in less than two weeks. More on reddit.com

I’m looking to get a new credit card that works to help with my travel expenses. I have the scotiabank basic scene card, so I’m not gaining much with this. I travel approximately 2-3 times a year outside of Canada, but typically one of those trips is 3-4 weeks long. At home, most of my spending is personal purchases, I still live at home so I don’t have groceries, big monthly bills etc. I don’t care much for lounge access or anything of that sort, I think I just want a credit card that has good perks to help save me some money while travelling or help protect me while travelling. I also live in a border city so I travel over to the states often (like approx 2-3 times a month) and typically fly out of DTW as well. I’m not airline specific when I travel, I typically look for the best deal. Looking for recommendations on any cards that could help me save some money abroad or offer me some good benefits for my travels. Thank you !

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Travel Credit Card Recommendation
January 9, 2025 -

Looking to get some recommendations on the best credit card for my current situation. I live in Toronto and I recently started travelling a lot so I went all in on Air Canada/Aeroplan and now have accumulated about 175k points between me and my wife. I have an AMEX Aeroplan Reserve (Currently on 2nd year with the card) with an extra card for my wife, and I also have a CapitalOne World Elite MC (1.5% cashback towards travel purchases) and so does my wife.

Paying yearly $599 + $199 for my AMEX + supplemental card and $130 for the Capital One

As I continue to do more travelling, I might be interested in a credit card with good exchange rates as I always use credit card for purchases while travelling.

I plan on cancelling my AMEX at the end of my 2nd year in September, and also want to replace my Mastercard for something with better benefits or exchange rates.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
