Free VPNs are never good. They usually make money by selling your data, which is worse than just not using the VPN. However, some "free" VPNs suggestion I can gave right now are ProtonVPN, and Windscribe. If you ever, however, want to go paid, go with ProtonVPN or Mullvad.

I use the windows version, not the extension, so not sure how reliable the extension is, but you could try ProtonVPN. It's the only free VPN I know of that is funded by the premium users.

A while back someone suggested Hola, however, suggested it was a rather suspect service. I don't know any of the more intricate details.

Others suggested to simply use another browser such as Opera which contains a free VPN for the sites where a VPN was required, but that seems like a crazy resource heavy solution and not very practical.

Would downloading a VPN be better rather than an extension? I don't really have any desktop applications where a VPN would be necessary.

No, a free VPN isn't really going to help you. You'll get banned from the sites you want to access immediately. I'd recommend NordVPN or Surfshark. For Nord, I found this promo that gives you 74% off.

VeePN is known for using shills on reddit. I'm not sure if this extension even uses VPN. I couldn't find information about which protocols and encryption standards it supports.

You have to be careful with free VPNs. Some of them are P2P which means other people's traffic is being routed through your network. Others sell your data or restrict access to things like torrents. I can however recommend proton vpn if you just want a free extension and don't plan on torrenting.
