I’m about to move to a small studio and want to invest in a super high quality futon that can act as my every day couch AND bed. Willing to drop up to $2k, but it’s difficult to find any good recommendations online so far. Any advice?
Side note: I have slept comfortably on floors before w Japanese style futons but no longer want to look a mouse straight in the eye.
Due to finances I'm living in a rented room and need space as my desk and computer and dresser are in this room. I'm going to get rid of my traditional full size bed frame and mattress. I want something I can fold up to create more space. I went back and forth and came to these options.
1) A Futon Frame with a Milliard Memory Foam Futon Mattress - Full Size ( I didnt put link as I don't know if it's allowed here) Can serve as a couch or bed.
2) Tri-Fold Memory Mattress and a foldable frame ( I can fold both and put in a corner)
3) Folding Rollaway Bed with wheels - reviews seem to say they are not that comfortable. But I could roll away in a corner. Not sure how comfortable the mattress could be being folded like that.
Anyone use any of these as a main sleeping bed or have thoughts on which is more practical for flexibility and space saving when needed? Thanks!

Yeah, I want to change my bed out to a futon because I want to get something a little smaller not so robust like a full-on bed. I like the interchangeable futons such as Nirvana Futons. And I do know that Japanese futons exist.
I want to get something that I can just put away, either west style futon (bed to sofa) or a Japanese one. Because I'm going to be getting a desk and possibly VR. The only way I can really get it is buying it off Amazon. Any recommendations y'all have?
The ones I have been looking at are Nirvana Futons, Kodiak Furniture, FULI, EMOOR, Milliard, & DHP. Are the brands I've looked at so if any of y'all have any other suggestions, I'd happily take them!
Thank you, thank you, y'all! :)
Must ship to Canada and ethical manufacturing is a strong point in its favor
What's the best way to get started with sleeping on the floor for someone new? For context I've always preferred firmer mattresses, and I got the firmest one they had back when I bought mine. Doing this to also achieve the benefit of having more space in my room. I have a budget of $200.
I'm considering getting a shikibuton (Japanese futon) but don't want it to go straight on the floor. I've come across these cardboard beds from a company called Yona that claim their design to be very breathable and supportive. I'm considering whether or not it would be breathable enough to place the shikibuton directly on the bedframe? Or if y'all think it would be necessary to get a tatami mat/some kind of support system underneath the shikibuton still?

My bed takes up almost a quarter of my home, i could really use that space for storage and a desk.
So a futon that i could roll up in the morning would be perfect, although im worried that it will impact my quality of sleep. I have adhd and have struggled with insomnia in the past.
What are yalls experiences, and do you have any advice how to get into futons?
I’m looking getting getting a futon to replace my bed so I can have more bedroom space but I’m hard-pressed to find an affordable futon that doesn’t seem like it would be a pain to sleep on for longer than a couple of weeks.
Any recommendations that won’t break the bank?
I tried a futon mattress straight on the floor and i really like it, but i still want the space/storage associated with a bed. There seems to be surprisingly few options for me, but maybe I’m searching the wrong thing? Any tips?
I'm looking for a futon that's BIFL and comfortable. Most of the stuff I see on Amazon looks like it's made to last the duration of a lease. Any ideas?
Honestly futons might just suck haha. I've had three. All very uncomfortable couches for extended periods, and didn't take long before they were uncomfortable to lie on as well. I would recommend against metal pole style frames and go for wood slats if able.
Don’t buy it off amazon, even at crappy furniture stores you’ll be able to tell if it’s comfortable or no
I'm looking for BIFL futon or other sleeper couch recommendations. I'm not expecting a BIFL mattress, but a frame that can withstand roudy children and remain easy for elderly grandparents to operate one handed.
Thanks!
I move around a lot and prefer to live in small apartments and lofts. What are some good options for a futon that is comfortable and will last.
I prefer dark wood or retro colors for styling.
I like the difference between futon and futon (see wikipedia) We've had this style of futon for the last 20 years, and they've served us well. I think it's really the price that differentiates the two; futons are priced like a cheap couch, futons are priced like a mattress. If you can find a futon that's priced like the matress/couch combo that it is, you will be very well served. Otherwise you're just buying cheap dorm-room crap.
I can't offer much advice other than to avoid the ones sold in big-box retailers. I've had futons from WalMart, Target and Big Lots, and none of the three held up very well. I finally decided just to get a normal bed, single size, and get a collapsible frame for it.
If you want a futon that will hold up well, try checking bedding-specific stores; avoid the big-box retailers.
I know this question has been asked many a time, but most of the forums I have found have been 2+ years old or about Japanese futons that roll up after use. I am specifically looking for classic convertible couch - bed futons. I do not want a sofa bed because I will likely sleep on it in the folded position most days, and I do not want a day bed because I want the option to extend into a full size bed while maintaining the thickness of the mattress.
I am planning to replace my couch with a futon, with the goal of then getting rid of my bed and just utilizing the futon. I have a small apartment and just hate how much space my bed takes up when I'm not sleeping and want more space for creative activities.
I have no issue with harder mattresses, and slept on a futon as a teen. I also am open to spending a pretty penny on a quality futon mattress.
The best rec I have seen so far has been for this futon mattress and will likely purchase the frame from futon land or futon shop
I'm looking for a comfortable futons.

And I'll just get this out of the way I'm so used to sleeping on garbage mattresses that it won't bother me. Even if it's slightly more comfortable than what I have right now that's great for me lol. Mattress I have right now is a full and it's not nice to sleep on, the last one which was a queen was a little worse because the springs would dig into you. I've slept on carpet floor, in a sleeping bag, those bad camper beds (pull out and table ones), recliners, sofas, and I don't have for me personally no real way to say what's comfortable or not because I'm just so used to bad mattresses lmao.
The ones I have been looking at are Nirvana Futons, Kodiak Furniture, FULI, EMOOR, Milliard, & DHP. Are the brands I've looked at so if any of y'all have any other suggestions, I'd happily take them! I don't want anything too expensive, not those $1000 ones people have recommended.
Thank you, thank you, y'all! :)
Hi,
I'm planning to dispose my bed and sleep on futon mattress. There are so many sellers online and I couldn't decide which one is reliable and a quality one.
Appreciate if someone can suggest a good futon mattress or shikibuton
Thanks!
I'm not sure if this is the best thread for this, but this sub seems to have come up the most when searching for Japanese futon mattress. So, I have had my current japanese futon mattress since late 2023. I moved from my last place (renting a room in a house) to a studio on my own. I am thinking about getting a bed frame to get my mattress off the floor. From the research I have done it looks like a platform bed frame is what I would be looking for, but the ones with headboards seem to have too big of a gap for my mattress. My mattress isn't that thick and so it would leave a gap.
Mattress pic one
Mattress pic two
This frame is from same company that I bought my mattress from, but the headboard is really small
Would be nice but headboard too high
Might work 1 and 2
My questions are:
Does anybody have links or names of what I should be looking for?
Has anybody else put a similar mattress onto a frame? If so, was it still comfortable?
Anything I should be considering that I haven't considered?
