Hi. I'm fourteen, and use a computer to watch videos, google stuff, and do other things like that. I want to get a laptop that's strong enough to run games, like Roblox. It doesn't need to be super big, or fancy. Preferably on the cheaper side.
My current conputer is a Dell Latitude 3150, if it helps. I've had it for like five years and it's borderline unuseable
I have been saving up and can afford any computer I want but know nothing about computers, I need help figuring it out what to get. I need something that can handle large xlsx and coding files, that can be connected to a monitor for 10+ hours without overheating, that runs on a windows 11 software and that has an ok battery life with a nice keyboard for when I am not on my monitor. I am currently thinking about the Windows Surface 7 but wanted to ask the community as I don't know what I am doing. PLEASE HELP ME :).
Videos
I usually use my laptop for things that I believe are simple. I watch and download movies, browse the internet with many tabs open, use Word and Excel, and run screenwriting programs. And not much more.
Sometimes, for work-related reasons, I edit videos and photos. Right now, it’s not something I do frequently, but it might be in the future. So, it would be nice if my laptop could handle these tasks with ease.
I don’t play video games or do streaming.
With this in mind, what laptop would you recommend I buy in 2025? Considering that I hope my laptop will last me for several years and that I can make the most out of it.
One more thing: I love watching movies, so I’m not sure if this is relevant, but I suppose I’d prefer a screen that allows me to enjoy them. I mean good resolution and, maybe, a decent size. Right now, I have a laptop with a 16-inch screen.
One last thing: I work with a lot of files, and for example, my laptop's storage is currently almost full. Maybe this could be solved with an external hard drive or something similar. But I suppose I’d prefer a laptop that already comes with ample storage.
I guess it’s obvious to say that I’m looking for something good (something that meets the needs I described), aesthetically pleasing, and, if possible, affordable.
Alright, that’s all.
Do you have any recommendations?
I’m looking forward to your suggestions!
Looking to spend as little as possible, under $1,000 but under $500 would be preferred.
Prefer something new.
We’re not attached to any brand or any specific style.
Don’t really care what it looks like or feels like.
Indifferent on size but at least 15 inches preferably.
Need to be able to run Microsoft programs and the stupid cricut brand program. Hope to have a different style cutting program in the future.
Doesn’t necessarily need to be a gaming device/ don’t plan to game. I don’t have any idea about what size rams/gigs/etc would be optimal.
Need to have an option for a keyboard, don’t care how that’s accomplished if it’s with an attached or Bluetooth type. Attachable mouse option, again usb or Bluetooth comparable.
We’re not terribly invested in a computer system, don’t care about brand, but need something reliable and will last more than 5 years. Other things, we’re based in the US, have access to all major retailer’s, have access to Costco and Sam’s club, ok with tablet or laptop and don’t necessarily need technical support related to the computer.
I am currently looking into getting a new laptop as my 7-year-old HP is showing its age. I plan on having a gaming rig for more high-end performance within the next year so any laptop I would be looking into wouldn't need to "do it all". Money isn't much of an issue, and I would need this laptop to be able to run engineering programs such as CREO or SolidWorks. My work has provided an everyday use laptop for my engineering purposes; however, I cannot use it for personal use. I do not want apple whatsoever, but anything else is up for grabs. The apple part is non-negotiable, I've worked at a phone retail store and seen firsthand how shady apple can be to their customers.
I just want a laptop that's going to be fairly good at whatever I use it for. Nothing too fancy. Something quality that's going to last a good few years

This month's update includes the best general use laptops that are available currently, including new laptops with 13th Gen Intel and Ryzen 7000 series! Be sure to ask questions about your next laptop purchase!
My best gaming laptops list was last month. This time, I have an updated version of my general list of good general use options. If you are looking for a gaming laptop list instead, please click here to view my list from August 2023!
As a reminder, this list isn't a definitive list to determine what you should get. It should give you an overall idea of what you should be able to expect in a given price range. If you have any questions about anything listed here, let me know, I will assist you!
Here is a general list for options that are good for general use.
General use applies to anyone who streams videos or movies, browses the Internet, does school work, does music production, etc. This list also has options that are good for light gaming.

Here is a small guide for searching for a good general use laptop.

Look for a decent processor! For general use, you will likely want at least an i3 or Ryzen 3 processor for smooth performance. Big into multitasking? Then, go for at least an i5 or Ryzen 5 processor. It is important to note that Intel's 13th gen CPUs are superior to AMD CPUs in single-core and multi-core performance. Here, I have organized the CPUs into general categories (generally in performance order):
-
Low-End CPUs: Celeron N4020, Ryzen 3 7320C, i5-1135G7, Ryzen 5 5500U, Ryzen 5 5625U, Ryzen 7520U, i5-1235U, Ryzen 5 7530U
-
Mid-Range CPUs: i7-1195G7, i7-1250U, i7-1255U, Ryzen 7 5700U, Ryzen 7 5800U
-
High-End CPUs: i7-1260P, i7-1355U, Ryzen 7 7735U, i7-1360P, i5-13500H, i7-12700H, Apple M1, Apple M2, Apple M2 Pro
-
Look for SSDs in laptops! If you want a smooth performance, an SSD is highly recommended for faster boot times and faster load times. Any laptop with an extra M.2 NVMe slot can add this Silicon Power 128 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. Any laptop with an extra 2.5" drive slot can add this 120 GB Inland Professional 2.5" SATA III SSD.

Looking for a good battery life or low weight? It is available! If you're looking for a good battery life, look for a laptop with a large capacity battery. Additionally, if the laptop has a high-power CPU (H), battery life will be lower. For general use, most people will be fine with a low-power CPU (Y, U, P) processors, which will improve battery life. Another factor is a dedicated graphics card. Most users won't need one. If you don't need a dedicated graphics card, then it is a wise choice to avoid one for a better battery life. In the $500+ range, a low weight is easy to find.

Looking to stay under $1k...would like to play baldur's gate but also looking for best graphics possible. Can anyone help? New to this will be my first gaming laptop.
Could spend a couple extra bucks if it was really worth it. Don't need a huuuuge screen but big enough to have a good gaming experience.
Does anyone have any good recommendations on laptops for casual use? I used to have a Dell Inspiron (not sure what model pretty sure it’s discontinued ) and it ran for quite a few years but it stopped working around four or five years ago so I haven’t had a laptop in a good while. I’m in no way a computer expert, I’m not in school, I would like something with a good battery run time and possibly good performance. I will probably only use it for Netflix, Social Media and writing stories.
I was looking into a Microsoft Surface but wanted some advice. My budget is around $600-700.Any helpful suggestions?
USA. I've had a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series for over 7 years and it's been perfect for casual home use. I just use it for surfing the internet and youtube/video streaming. No heavy software programs or gaming. I'd love something under $500 with a 16"/17" screen, at least 16GB ram, and 512G SSD storage is plenty. Open to other brands, its just that my Dell was so reliable. Not opposed to used/refurbished laptops either. Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for a good windows based laptop for home purposes. I am not a gamer. I do some documentation, internet usage, genealogy, etc.
Does anyone have any recommendations what I can look for or brands to stay away from? Thanks.

Look for a decent processor! For general use, you will likely want at least an i3 or Ryzen 3 processor for smooth performance. Big into multitasking? Then, go for at least a quad core processor. It is important to note that Intel has continued to excel in single-core performance, while AMD has continued to excel in multi-core performance, and as a result, it is a bit difficult to compare options from both brands. As a result, I have organized the CPUs into general categories (generally in performance order, but as I mentioned earlier, the discrepancy makes comparison difficult):
-
Low-End CPUs: MediaTek Helio P60T, Celeron N3350, Celeron N4020, 4th Gen i5
-
Mid-Range CPUs: Ryzen 5 3450U, i5-1135G7, Ryzen 5 4500U, Ryzen 5 5500U, Ryzen 5 4680U, i5-11300H

Hello which one did you get? I am looking at the zenbook 14 inch um435 because the screen seems to be a 16x9 and the 13 looks too small. The zenbook looks amazing with the black finish and slim edges. Compared to the envy 13 and the acer swift it looks so much better.
Why do I see so many laptops advertised with some gtx 1600 card and retailing around the same price as the 3060 or 3070 carded laptops
See title. I regularly have to travel, and I'm tired of lugging around a heavy laptop that's complete overkill. While out traveling (work, etc.) I usually use them for the following: Scrolling websites, watch movies, office work, light coding work. I don't need a fat GPU.
Just something which is sturdy enough.
I recently broke my Lenovo laptop that I’ve had for 5 years and that thing sucked. I’m just looking for a solid reliable laptop that I can watch YouTube videos and 1080p without lagging 😂. I mostly used it for some school and work but mostly just watching movies and videos no game for anything. I would also like if it looked decent and had a “comfortable” keyboard if that make sense. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Reliability is my biggest thing I’m looking for
Since you are going to use this for general use, I would recommend Acer Swift because it comes with everything you need, i7-1355U CPU which is one of the best in your budget, 16GB of ram for smooth multitasking, good SSD storage of 512GB for faster boot up and loading, 14 inch Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, Wi-Fi 6, high build quality, and backlit keyboard.

Given your needs and budget, here are a few reliable laptops that should meet your requirements:

I've had the same MacBook Pro since 2011, it's severely outdated. I prefer windows based machines now, I think.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$500-$1100 USD -
Are you open to refurbs/used?
Refurbs, yes -
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I definitely want a laptop with good performance first and foremost. Build quality would likely be second. I do not care about a touch screen, in fact if that increases the price and takes away from other aspects of the laptop, I'd prefer not to have it. A good battery life is a plus. -
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Does not matter -
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
N/A -
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light gaming. No specific games, I have a PS5 for gaming. I like to use my laptop for torrenting, modding my old consoles, discord, etc. Nothing really specific. -
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I really don't intend to heavily game. Maybe just some small indie games or the sims. -
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I need to have an HDMI output. I prefer to have a USB A and USB C port. The more features the better but I don't think I really need an optical drive at this point. A touch screen would be cool but again it's not really essential. -
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have had bad experiences with HP in the past so I prefer to avoid them. There are so many different laptops with different processors and memory sizes and honestly I know very little about what to get. I just want my laptop to last a long time, my current one is going on 13 years which is crazy, but I don't expect another to last me this long. I would like to keep my budget around $1000 and get my best bang for my buck. My reason for wanting windows is better compatibility with applications for my use. I favor Asus or Lenovo, but I have no laptop experience with either of those brands.
The Surface Pro 3 struggles to meet some basic daily study requirements. I’m looking for a device that:
Uses Windows
Doesn’t need gaming-level specs but can handle several programs at once (e.g., Spotify, Anki, Chrome, Notion, Photoshop)
Ideally costs under €1000
I’m not very tech-savvy, but I don't think I need top-tier graphics. Perhaps it's more about RAM though I'm open to suggestions!
Hi all, I'm looking for a laptop for everyday use - Mostly used for streaming movies/TV shows and basic work tasks.
Ideally looking for a larger screen and good enough speakers for roughly £500
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
I'd recommend this ACER Aspire 3 17.3" Laptop from Currys for £399.
Are you able to stretch your budget a bit? If so then there's currently a bargain on r/HardwareSwapUK for £690: https://www.reddit.com/r/HardwareSwapUK/comments/zmwoqs/sg_brand_new_dell_gaming_laptop_rtx_3060_16gb_ram/
If you're able to afford the extra £190 it's well worth it (the same laptop is currently about £1400 on Amazon).
Depends but what you're looking for but this one will handle anything you throw it and could play any game easily. Should last you a long time too
I’m in the market for a new laptop. My current one has an i5 processor, which has worked fine for me. I only really use my laptop for general browsing, like social media, YouTube, and streaming. I also make a lot of Google docs and spreadsheets.
Based on my pretty basic usage of laptops, which processor do you think is appropriate? Would an i3 be just fine for me? Money isn’t a huge issue but I don’t want to spend more than I have to. Or are i7s worth the extra money?
