Ask for 1-3 days from your dad for research purpose. Assuming you will use that laptop for 10 years because laptop are just like cars, the moment you bought them, their price will fall (but their value won't). So you better use it until it die to maximise your money. Assign a budget of RM3.5k-RM4.2k. I'm using Acer laptop as standard of price so if you found a laptop around that price, pick one and compare it with other brands (HP/Asus/Lenovo). You use that Acer laptop as benchmark to compare with the others. Note this down: CPU, GPU/Graphics, RAM. Most important to pay attention. These parts are not easily swappable. Some laptop can swap RAM, but you won't know until somebody who use them tell you, so don't bother research this. Storage. 512GB single SSD. If you're gaming, go for 1TB SSD. Or ask seller if there's another slot for storage so you can add another in the future. WiFi/HDMI/VGA/Serial/LAN port. If they have, no need to know beyond this. If they haven't, check next point. USB port. You want to have at least 1 USB Type-C and 1 USB Type-A port. Usually, you get more than 1 USB Type-A but you need at least 1 Type-C for future proof and less headache. This is for any adapter that you will inevitably use if you have no HDMI/VGA port. Also for mouse. Backlit keyboard. If you already know how to type without looking at keyboard, you can skip this. Sometimes, you will type in the dark. Trust me, those night with no electricity is not only hot, you have to complete your assignment in darkness. Weight. I don't care about this because I didn't consider my 5kg backpack with notes and laptop to be heavy. But sometimes, those days when you're fasting and you need to climb 10 floors of stairs because the lift is in maintenance is HELL. Never I repeat, never look at free gift. They are not worth it. You might as well spend extra RM60 to buy silent wireless mouse from Logitech or a cheap Armageddon gaming mouse. Bag? What bag? You think I will carry one bag with laptop and another with my notes? Heh... Wait, did you just say free HDD? Oh you meant flash drive when you say USB storage. Never mind. Never trust the shop recommendation. But, you can trust Monaliza YouTube. Try to get a used laptop for cheap (or even free). If you have money left over, upgrade the boot drive (C: on Windows) to a new SSD, and replace the battery if necessary. You may need to get a Windows 10 ISO since Windows 11 is not compatible with a lot of old PC hardware. Most anything that can run Windows will get you through programming in any language.
Once you have some schooling under your belt, try running Linux on your laptop. It will provide better performance on old hardware and give you some learning opportunities that can help you get ahead of your courses.

If you are after affordability, Acer is the way to go. Acer generally offers affordable laptops in both mainstream and gaming categories. This is a great datasheet of laptops. You can find some good Acer and Asus laptops there.. ASUS, however, does offer affordable mainstream laptops, but their gaming range is top of the line and some of the best in the market, and they are expensive. In the budget category, they are more or less the same in terms of quality imo.

Honestly as long as you have a decent processor and 16gb of ram you should be fine. Also don't get a mac. I personally don't like then and most colleges that I know of wouldnt teach on them. Windows or Linux all the way(or in my case downlaodong a virtual machine so i can use linux on my windows). If you're going for a gaming one, just make sure it's decent. You really can't go too wrong because they are prebuilt so all parts in then are compatible with eachother. I recently graduated as an electrical engineer. I got a laptop with ryzen 7 5800H, RTX3060, 16gb ram. I got these specs just to future proof it a bit. I can play any games on high to max settings with no problems. Main thing though is get a good processor and 16gb of ram.
