Most Reliable Thinkpad in 2023
You can always get a lemon from any brand. This said, all Thinkpads should be reliable. Mine always have been and I have got several of them since IBM days. Currently I own a P14s G2 AMD 32 GB + 1TB SSD and it works very well. Get yours with extended premium onsite warranty to make things easier (this is what I always do) as in my case it's my daily work tool (industrial programmer) and I can't afford being without laptop for a week. Given you will use Solidworks, you should go for the P1 not the X1 extreme as it has the certified graphics drivers for 3D software like SolidWorks, not that X1E is not capable to do it, it's more that if you have problems, they won't tell you it's because the GPU is not supported. To get a powerful machine look at the P series (P1 included) or X1E. To get a portable laptop go for a X1 carbon or a T14s. (P1 or X1E have a big power brick that make them less portable). Notice P14s is not a powerhorse it's a rebranding of a T14 with certified drivers. So, it should not be in the P series lineup. The new Z series are the AMD counterparts of other Intel powerful machines, they look interesting too. I guess longevity will depend more on the upgradeability rather than in anything else... In my case, I get the laptops maxed out from day 1 and they usually last me 4 to 5 years. My use case is Visual Studio, ABB RobotStudio, KUKA Workvisual, Codesys, Beckhoff TwinCAT, from time to time I edit my promotional videos of robot cells and machines programmed using Davinci Resolve. My P14s G2 makes all this without issues. They say lately AMD works better than Intel (heat, battery, and performance wise) I have not been able to compare 2 laptops of the same generation, but I can say (except for battery) my AMD laptop works very well. If you want to dig into the components of the laptop to check what is installed and decide based on that, you can always go into PSREF web site and check what real options are available for your country. Hope all this helps a little. More on reddit.com

Choppy and pixelated picture when casting from Windows to TV screen
I am trying to cast (Windows + K) my laptop screen on my TV screen, and the picture is choppy and pixelated whenever there's motion on screen. My laptop is an LG Gram 17 with 16:10 aspect ratio. My TV is a TCL Roku 65R635-CA 4K with 16:9 aspect ratio.… More on learn.microsoft.com

Which Lenovo Laptop Is Best for Students?

While we often recommend students consider a MacBook Air for school, or a Dell Premium laptop if they're set on Windows, Lenovo has comparable Yoga and Slim models that would serve much of the same function. Likewise, the new ThinkPad X9 series seems like a shoo-in for college campuses, being directly aimed at Apple's thin-and-light titans.

If you're on a tighter budget or your coursework doesn't require such a well-equipped machine, Lenovo's IdeaPad line would serve you better. This series provides budget-to-midrange systems for basic workloads and entertainment needs.

Finally, Lenovo's ThinkPad and ThinkBook lines feature laptops with top-end processing hardware and even professional-grade parts for academic workloads in computer science, software engineering, and media editing, to name a few. (High-end engineering work is best reserved for workstation models in the ThinkPad P line.)

Which Series of Lenovo Laptops Is Best?

Because Lenovo makes every one of its laptops with a specific set of customers in mind, we can't point you to one line of Lenovo laptops as the absolute "best" for every situation. With that in mind, we've listed and covered each of Lenovo's laptop series below to help you decide which type of Lenovo laptop is best for you.

Lenovo's conventional laptops include ThinkPads (business laptops), ThinkBooks (small-business work machines), and IdeaPads (general-use laptops). Gaming machines fall under Lenovo's Legion (higher-end) and LOQ (budget) lines, while 2-in-1 hybrids come in Yoga (premium) and Flex (budget) varieties. First, let’s look at the laptops that started it all: the ThinkPads.

Which Lenovo Laptop Is Most Durable?

According to Lenovo's website, "ThinkPad products are currently tested for 12 total methods and 20 procedures" under the US Department of Defense’s MIL-STD 810G standards. These include tolerance for mechanical shock, humidity, sand, dust, and even fungus, among other hazards and contaminants. Like most laptop brands, Lenovo doesn't emphasize durability to the same degree in its general-use, budget, ultraportable, hybrid 2-in-1, and gaming laptop categories.

However, Lenovo isn't known for producing "true rugged" machines that resist significant damage and weather exposure. Dell, Durabook, Getac, and Panasonic are players in that market. For those, check out our buying guide for the best rugged laptops.

r/thinkpad on Reddit: Most Reliable Thinkpad in 2023
February 4, 2023 -

Hi everyone!

Simple question, but I anticipate a variety of nuanced answers. Would really appreciate it if you could please explain to me as a first-timer:

I'm considering a thinkpad as a do-everything, desktop replacement device for school and for a tech/consulting business.

All I want is a laptop that can last me the most years while performing well and having no quality control issues. I have a custom tower pc for whenever I'm at home, but want that sustained power when I'm out and about. The most demanding things I do is Solidworks models, and have way too many apps and chrome tabs open when doing research.

What thinkpad would you recommend for this? I'm considering the X1 Extreme, X1 Carbon, and any others you all suggest.

The MacBook Pro looks quite enticing due to the quality control, but want to stick with windows if possible to get that same level of longevity.

Top concerns are quality control and longevity: least likely to have a lemon or heat issues that compromise longevity. I've had too many issues with Dells, HP, and Surface Pro's. Should I consider an ASUS instead?

Thank you! 😊

X1 Extreme if you're fine with its battery life - it's not the best. Z16 had some issues previously, but seems like they were ironed out after the release. Otherwise, interesting laptop, good battery life, very decent performance. X1 Carbon isn't very powerful - it's rather a very portable office machine for executives. Macbook Pro is quite a powerhouse, we use 14 and 16 models at work, very happy with them - as long as you don't need Windows-specific apps that aren't supported on M1 chips. My bet would be either on X1 Extreme or Z16
