r/localmultiplayergames on Reddit: 4 player split screen games on PS4?
May 7, 2021 -

I'm having a going away party on the 16th and am looking for some good 4 player party type games or even 2 player with fast matches (like nidhogg) so far I've been thinking about getting The Escapist 2, Nidhogg 2, Stickbold, Override Mech City Brawl, and SpeedRunners. I'm sure thats more than enough games but any suggestions for games I might not know about would be greatly appreciated

Overcooked 1 & 2 (one of the best couch co-op party games ever made) Gang Beasts (mindless fun) Trackmania Turbo (it has a double driver hot seat mode, two players controlling one car, tons of fun) Brawlhalla (smash bros clone, it's free btw) Brawlout (smash bros rip-off, not very bad) Rocket League (football/soccer but with cars, also free) Disc Jam (tennis but with discs) Move or Die (many fast paced minigames, lots of fun) Bossgard (unique concept, you can play as the boss against your friends or you and your friends against an AI boss, many different combinations... really awesome concept but the game didn't get much attention, the devs are great btw) Headsnatchers (party type minigames) Cake Bash (cutest game ever on PS4) Party Panic (name checks out) Marooners (party type minigames) Action Henk (racing but with action figures on their butt) Streets of Rage 4 (if you're familiar with the series, a Sega classic) Castle Crashers (cute adventure couch co-op) Crash Team Racing (kart racing but requires some skill beware of that) Cel Damage HD (a remaster of the stupid funny cars combat game) Grip (2-4 players split-screen racing and battle arena cars type game) SkyScrappers (same as SpeedRunners but you climb up and can hit your rivals) Tricky Towers (Tetris like stupid fun) Hyper Jam (beat'em up party game) Laser League (avoid the opposite color lasers and try to beat your opponent doing the same) Guns, Gore and Cannoli 1 & 2 (run and gun couch co-op) Borderlands (2-4 players split-screen for the first and second game, the newest addition, Borderlands 3 has only 2 players split-screen, couch co-op fps) Serious Sam Collection (a remaster of the first person shooter that has 4 players split-screen, it's a collection of 3 games) Almost all Call of Duty games (specially zombie modes) CoD Black Ops 3/4, WWII... Helldivers (not much of a party type game but it's fun as hell (pun intended)) Alienation, and Magicka (same as Helldivers but more forgiving) 2K Battlegrounds (WWE arcade game) 2K Playgrounds 2 (NBA arcade game) as well as other official sim WWE and NBA games if you're a fan of them, all have 2-4 players enabled, same as FIFA games. Please note that all the above titles are 2-4 players shared or split-screen. The following titles are only 2-player: All fighting games (Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Soul Calibur, King of Fighters, except Dead or Alive 5 it has 2v2 tag team matches). Darksiders Genesis (action-adventure twin stick shooter game with nice fighting and puzzles not exactly a party game). Dead Nation (couch co-op zombie fighting twin stick shooter). A Way Out and It Takes Two, 2 games made by EA of the best couch co-op experiences, specially the newest one, It Takes Two. (Worth mentioning that if one person bought the game they can invite the other person to play online for free, one copy needed) Hope this helps :)

Tricky Towers is definitely a blast. Everyone knows Tetris and this just makes it more chaotic. I had 3 family members over last weekend and they understood the concept right away, and after 30 minutes they were already challenging for the trophy. Ended up playing for 3 hours straight.

It has a very stylistic macabre artstyle, with gameplay that hinges on a deep and varied crafting system. The further you get, the more you will learn: Starting out you'll only be gathering twigs and grass, maybe chop a tree. You'll also gather basic food such as mushrooms and carrots. Then you'll start building your encampment, learning how the day/night cycle and the seasons work. Later on you'll start building massive farms, refridgerators, fortifications, and many other things. All of this is done for the sake of not starving. As the game progresses, you will encounter mechanics such as drought, forest fires, the rainy, season, the cold and many others. To counteract these you need to plan properly and will probably die the first time around. Once your knowledge reaches a certain level, you'll be able to survive indefinitely. | Tweak the gameplay settings to fit any skill level: The game gives you a lot of customization options. You can change the length of day, weather patterns, and spawn rates for resources and monsters. This allows you to adjust the difficulty level to suit your skill and preference. | Steep learning curve: The first few attempts will last only a couple of in-game days. This is because the game has various punishing mechanics, which you can only learn through trial and error. One such mechanic is the darkness, which will kill you in under a minute if you don't have a light source. Followed by packs of hounds that randomly spawn to kill you. In most cases preparation is key and you can't prepare without knowledge. | Pleasantly twisted sense of humor: There's a dark sense of humor that pervades the game. There's a humanoid spider boy who can grow a beard of silk. There's a living chest called Chester who acts like a dog. There's also silly info text, werepigs, trees that retaliate when you chop them, and many other things. | Deep and varied crafting system: The crafting system has a lot of depth to it and there are tons of items to make. Starting with the recipe for a torch and a pickaxe. You can also make weapons, armor, and various laboratories that enable new technologies. Building new stuff and advancing is the key to surviving the coming winter. | Great replay value: Don't Starve Together has randomly generated (customizable) levels, unlockable characters, a story mode, and you can also play it with up to 5 other friends. All of this helps keep subsequent attempts/playthroughs fresh. | Unique mix of 2D and 3D art offers a change of pace: Don't Starve Together has a very unique art style that places two-dimensional characters in a three-dimensional setting. Even the waves in the sea look like cardboard cutouts used in a puppet show. This look and feel to the graphics is a nice change of pace from ultra-realistic games. | Can get repetitive: You'll have to repeatedly collect a lot of basic materials like twigs, grass, and ore. This is because most of the starting recipes share the same required materials. Even later in the game you'll be doing many repetitive tasks. Gathering enough firewood for winter is especially bad because you have to chop down dozens of trees. All of this is made worse by the limited inventory space, causing you to make the same trip multiple times.

HELLDIVERS is a twin stick shooter that is sci-fi themed that has a single player and co-op campaign.HELLDIVERS is a twin stick shooter that is sci-fi themed that has a single player and co-op campaign. The scoring system greatly encourages teamwork: When playing co-op, once a level is completed there will be a score rewarded to the players. Luckily this score is not based off of kills, which means players can focus more on objectives instead of going lone wolf for kills. the scoring allows for more teamwork to happen, which is great as that is what co-op should be geared more towards, cooperation. | Requires more tactics over other twin stick shooters: Ammo is limited in the game, meaning the player needs to make each shot count. On top of this, where an enemy is hit matters as well, so center mass is the best place to shoot them, of course this is not always easy. Due to the fact that ammo is limited and placement of shots matter it is up to the player to try and figure out the best methods for not running out of ammo and shooting each creature. This requires patience and planning, something that is often missing from run of the mill twin stick shooters. | Intense co-op play: The whole game can be played in local or online co-op with up to three other players. Each stage is procedurally generated and feature certain objectives that need completed. Of course, the objectives need executed while hordes of enemies swarm you. This is what makes for the intense action as there are so many enemies to be found coming at you at all times, add in extra players and the action becomes quite turbulent thanks to the friendly fire mechanic. There is no way to turn off friendly fire which means everyone who is going in guns blazing may upset the other players meaning everyone will need to keep a close eye on all of the action taking place in order to succeed. | Heavily influenced by the film Starship Troopers: The main story of the game plays out a lot like the theme in Starship Troopers, where the world is united in exterminating an alien race on other planets. The humor found in the movie as well as the action are to be found in this game as well, which is all a bit over the top but all in fun, of which the game is. So for all of those that are fans of Starship Troopers, this game should offer a bit of nostalgia for them. | Enemies go all out during extractions: At the end of each stage the player/players must order an extraction vehicle. Once called the players must ward off an onslaught of enemies for 90 seconds. Only one player needs to get on the extraction vehicle, which means all out mayhem as each player can just start unleashing their most devastating weapons. This is quite a fun part of the game as each player can just go all out. | Joining co-op can be a pain: There is no way for everyone to just jump into a game, one player needs to host and then the others can be invited, but of course they already need to be on the players friend list, which may not always be the case which means more work to get everything together. A more seamless experience would be nice to see but sadly that is not how the co-op was designed. | Game gets difficult: There are 12 different classifications of difficulty in the game, as you progress the game gets a lot more difficult going all the way up to the twelfth difficulty. For some this may be too difficult and will end in frustration, so for those not looking for a challenge, this game may not be for them. | Great! I highly recommend you play the game. | Perfect co op game, best top down shooter out there- still busy online even years later

This creates a good change of pace from the regular hack and slash type gameplay. · | Nostalgia: It's a classic from the eighties that made it to these days. | Easily played on a sofa: Gauntlet offers full controller support that actually works quite well for an action RPG. This makes for a good game to play on a Steam Machine or other living room gaming PC. | Very repetitive gameplay: With a few exceptions, the gameplay and strategy is the same for the entire game. Very little progression or new abilities. "Potions" don't do anything until you can buy abilities. Game gets easier, not harder. (New colosseum mode adds some end game challenge.) | Fun as hell: It's challenging, for what it is, but not frustrating. · | Locked camera: The camera is locked in a single position, something that creates confusion while playing a busy area as the camera does not stay focused on the players character. While a locked camera made sense back in the Arcade or on home consoles where one screen was used, for online multiplayer it really does not make much sense. · | Wizard is complicated to use: The wizard character is complicated to use as he has nine spells but only two button combinations available to use them. This makes the character difficult to use which results in not may people wanting to play with the character. For online matches this means there are quite a few three player games as no one wants to take on using the fourth character, the Wizard. · | The best -local coop- hack n slash for ps4 (if you don't have the exaggerated amount of time that Diablo requires to play to reach a hard mode). · The Wizard is fun to use, not easy, but if you´re a gamer, you won't have problems, once you get used to the button's combinations. It's a shame that it doesn't have a sequel...

Rayman Legends is a 2D cartoon sidecrolling platformer.Rayman Legends is a 2D cartoon sidecrolling platformer.Visually impressive boss stages: The visual mechanics in the boss stages are pretty impressive as they use 3d rendering but still hold to the 2D graphical look of the game. This allows for bosses that weave in and out of stages as well as attacks that can come from the foreground or background depending on where the boss is located. · | Extended goals with daily and weekly online challenges: There are daily and weekly online challenges that users can compete in, against their friends or just the high scores listed. | Local co-op that is good for single room group play: Up to four local players can play sharing a single screen at the same time in Rayman Legends. Something that is often not the norm on PC but is seeing more new releases that support it. This is great for those with Steam Machines or living room PCs that want to be able to play with friends locally in one room. · | One of the best platformers released in years: From the beautiful design of the 2D cartoon graphics to the level design, soundtrack and multiplayer, Rayman Legends is on par with the best of platformers. | All powers unlocked from beginning: Unlike Rayman Origins, Legends has all of Rayman's powers unlocked from the beginning. Players are able to jump float, wall run and attack starting at the first level. | Fun and cute characters: The cartoony design of the characters is animated smoothly and looks great on screen. Each character's design is cute and amusing while also showing differentiating characteristics. | Up to four player local co-op so you can help children through hard parts: Up to four local players can play sharing a single screen at the same time in Rayman Legends which is great for when kids get stuck on hard parts as another sibling or parent can jump in and help them out. | Daily and weekly online challenges: There are daily and weekly online challenges that users can compete in, against their friends or just the high scores listed. | Up to four player local Co-Op so you can help children through hard parts: Up to four local players can play sharing a single screen at the same time in Rayman Legends which is great for when kids get stuck on hard parts as another sibling or parent can jump in and help them out. | Jump is floaty: The jump action feels a bit floaty which may take a bit to get use to. Normally platformers will offer tighter controls, which people tend to get used to making games that stray from that more difficult or just not something that appeals. · | One of the first games I got for the PS4 and I still pick it up to play a few rounds of challenges or work towards raising my Lum total. Solid game all around! It is pretty cool that they've kept the servers up and they continue to roll out challenges daily, weekly and monthly | realy fun and ragequiting | Really enjoyable game
