r/keyboards on Reddit: Looking for best 80% TKL (200 usd +/-)
July 20, 2023 -

Hello!

I'm new to mechanical keyboards, I own Keychron K1 which is low profile and I love it. But I would like to explore this whole wonderful world of switches, modding and cool keycaps. That's why I would like to have something with extremly good build quality, WIRELESS (it is important to me) and black :) that's it! Right now I'm thinking about Keychron K8 Pro (I really like Q3, but it is wired and Q3 Pro looks very strange with this buttons on the lest side) or NuPhy (I've heard that they are extremly good, but they don't have 80% keyboard, which makes me avoid this choise). Also I've heard that there is such keyboard as Zoom TKL (hope I am write) which has decent quality and has good customization, but as I understand it is very hard to get one and it is shipped dissasembled.

So, I hope to hear some advices:) will apreciate anything)

r/MechanicalKeyboardsUK on Reddit: Mechanical virgin looking for a 75% or 80% keyboard for less than £50
December 3, 2022 -

Hi there,

I'm researching to buy a smaller keyboard for under £50 (I live in the UK).

The main use would be work, including coding, but I'll use the same keyboard to play PC games.

The ideal size would be 75%, but if a good 80% is presented, it would be fine.

I'm not familiar with mechanical keyboards: for my work PC I use an HP "classic" membrane keyboard, and my laptops have normal "slim/scissor" keyboards (one PC, one Mac).

I'm willing to go with a mechanical and having hot-swap would be nice to be able to maybe try some different config in the future. But, if it's impossible to have a good mechanical for this price, I will need to go and find a membrane one.

I already did a lot of research (including r/BudgetKeebs) and so far found these that meet the criteria:

BrandNameKeysPrice
CherryCHERRY G84-410075%£45.94
E-YoosoE-Yooso Mechanical Gaming Keyboard75%£39.99
HavitMechanical Gaming Keyboard UK80%£40.99

ROYAL KLUDGESTK6160%£34.1
RedragonRedragon K55280%£38.99
LOGITECHLOGITECH G413 SE TKL80%£44.99
CIYCIY X7780%£49.99
AcerACER Nitro TKL Gaming Keyboard80%£48.99
ADXADX Firefight TKL Wireless Mechanical80%£24.97
MarvoKG953W-UK80%£26.72
SteelseriesSTEELSERIES Apex 3 TKL80%£49.99
PerixxPERIBOARD-60980%£14.99
PerixxPerixx PERIBOARD-613B80%£34.99

So, between these choices, any recommendations? Brands to run away from or something like that?

Other than these any other nice contenders?

One last thing that worries me with wireless/Bluetooth keyboards is the battery, I wouldn't want to keep replacing the whole keyboard because the battery is dead. How easy is it to find a replacement battery to buy? Are they kind of "standard" or each brand has its own battery packs and I need to start researching this, too?

Thanks!

Time to go to the nearest mechanic and ask if you can hold a socket wrench ;) Then you will no longer be a mechanical virgin. On a more serious note. I would suggest that you go to a larger computer store where they display keyboards, to check out how the different key types feel and sound like. There is a large difference between the different key types and while people on here do a good job describing different keys. It is really hard to follow along without any reference point. If you are goin to use the keyboard in a open or open'ish like office environment, then I would caution against getting switches of the clicky variant. It will not improve your relationship with your colleagues. As for replacing a battery? Well that will be keyboard specific, but most mechanical keyboards use a "flat pack" rechargeable batter of some sort. You should be able to replace it with a similar spec'ed battery by disassembling the keyboard. Fair warning it will often require some amount of soldering and you might need some kapton tape as well. Try looking for videos on youtube or similar platforms. There are a ton of teardown videos for keyboards, and there should be a fair chance there is teardown of your top choices.

Yo people, take a look at the IROK FE87 on Amazon US. On Sunday I ordered that keyboard because I think is the same as the CIY X77, it was 37 USD but yesterday it had a lower price so I got it for 30 USD. When it'll arrived I will try to compare it with the CIY X77 videos to confirm or not if it's the same PCB.
