Hey everyone, I'm buying a car for the first time since 2015, and I could use some help. My new job means I'll be commuting 45 minutes each way, mostly on the highway. I live in New England, and I need to buy this car by September 1. The commute will put 15K miles on the car per year, plus trips.
I'm looking for 1) 40+ MPG on the highway and 2) reliability. I would love manual transmission, but wouldn't prioritize it over the other two criteria. I know it's going to be a balance between the age of the car, the mileage, and the individual car history, but...
What are some make/model/year recommendations? Questions I should ask when I'm looking at used cars? Any other thoughts? Thanks!!
My budget: $10K would be great, but I could do up to $15K for a car that got excellent MPG or was a lot newer/lower mileage than the others. (I also posted a related question on r/usedcars.)

You have a couple options - 2014+ Mazda 3 is rated for 37 mpg highway. A 2016+ Civic is rated for 40. Also the 2015+ Honda Fit, but only with the CVT. And then you have the hybrid options - 1st/2nd gen Insight, 2012+ Civic Hybrid, good luck finding a Prius for $15k right now that doesn't have a million miles, Prius C.... with the exception of the 1st gen Insight, can't have a hybrid with a manual. So pick your poison. Smaller cars will be more efficient (typically), but less comfortable for a long highway run. So as tempting as a Fit or a Prius C might be for price reasons - maybe a Civic is still the better call here. Full disclaimer - own a Prius as of last year, so clearly that's where I chose to put my money, but I had a slightly higher budget than you.

You can probably find a Nissan Leaf or Fiat 500e. Those are all electric. Doubtful that they'll be cost effective to own though. Prius is the answer, but they'll be pretty rough under $10k. Unless you're driving a ton (in which case you should invest more in the car), you're probably better off with something like a regular ICE Corolla or Civic if you're looking for the most cost effective way of getting around.

MPG is not a huge deal as in paying more for a Prius or hybrid vehicle used can come back to bite you due to battery replacement and what not. For $10k you can’t go wrong with 2012-2013 Civics and 2011-2013 Toyota Corollas. They already get 25-35 mpg or more.
