r/NativePlantGardening on Reddit: What should I plant in Michigan?
January 16, 2024 -

Hey y’all! I have a large yard with full sun, very sandy poor soil, and a lawn that is basically weeds.

I have been planting low maintenance perennials like day lilies, irises, and hyacinths. I planted a bunch of dune grass last fall that is sprouting now and I hope takes off.

I would love to plant more perennials that do well with poor soil and low maintenance as well as some ground cover that mows decently. What would you plant and where would you get them? Sky’s the limit at this point. Thanks in advance guys!

Any suggestions for native landscaping plants that do double duty as good cuts for arrangements? Shrubs, grasses, perennials, etc? (Zone 6b Michigan)
There definitely are good native options! Baptisia (false indigo) flowers and foliage are both great. Mountain mints make good filler. I especially like Pycnanthemum muticum. Ninebarks provide nice sturdy filler all season long. Many Echinacea and Rudbeckia species have showy flowers. I've used switchgrass, Indian grass and prairie dropseed seed heads. If you have shade, don't discount native ferns, either. I used goldenrod and lady ferns in my wedding flowers! There are probably even more shrubs and forbs that can be used. You'd just have to experiment a bit. It's hard to make arrangements solely from a native landscape, but if you supplement with some annuals you can create some lovely arrangements. More on reddit.com

Help! Need ideas for what to plant here. Zone 6 (Michigan). Need it to be low maintenance. Thinking hostas in front of porch and maybe hydrangeas against house but what else to fill the space? Thanks in advance!
Make sure the Hostas aren’t in full Sun - it will fry them! More on reddit.com

Michigan Native Perennials | Order Online
Below are perennials that are native to the state of Michigan. Included on this list are some cultivars (cultivated varieties) and naturally-occurring hybrids that vary only slightly from the parent species. Some native gardeners choose to incorporate cultivars into their plantings and some do not. You can identify these plants by the addition of an extra name at the end (such as 'May Breeze'). For a more detailed look at Michigan native plants by county, please cross-reference the USDA's PLANTS database and Michigan Flora site.
