r/PowerBI on Reddit: Paid PowerBI Courses Worth It?

I’m a senior manager and have recently had a data analyst put under me as one of the many areas I oversee. I am mostly a hobbyist when it comes to data analysis and visualization but I can tell he has a lot to learn. Besides linking him up with other analytics groups in the company, I want to get approval for him to attend training the company would pay for. I think he needs to work on Dax and I guess I would say the aesthetic side of things. Any recommendations? Open to free training too, but those lend themselves more to being done on your own time, and I’m not sure he’s really got that motivation in him.

Our corporation wants everything to be on PowerBi going forward but has provided no resources to do so. My manager said they are willing to pay for a course to learn it, what is the best one paid or unpaid? Any certifications?

r/PowerBI on Reddit: Recommendations for online Power BI courses
January 18, 2023 -

I am looking for an online Power BI course that could help me to connect various data sources with the dashboard so that I could automate the process of dashboard updates.

I have basic knowledge of Power BI and have created a few dashboards using Excel data but would now like to combine cloud-based sources as well.

My company would be paying for the course. So any good quality suggestions for it would be welcome

Hi everyone! I’m very new to power BI, what would you say it’s the best way to learn it (mainly for data analysis). Would you recommend any online free course?

There are no "best" free course, all the resources that other commenters mentioned are good, but which one is the best depends on which style do you prefer. The number of courses available can be overwhelming, so my advice would be to just try one of them, see if you can easily follow the course, and continue until the end if it suits you. After you completed a course, do not search for another course. Straightaway look for your own dataset to practice. And then practice again. And practice again. And again. As you practice with different kind of datasets and use cases, you will need to google/ask around on how to solve different issues. That is how you will learn the most.

Hello everyone! I have just started learning power BI tool at my internship and would love to expand my knowledge and gain advanced learning in DAX.

Currently i am just updating the pre-made visuals at work and trying to modify the dashboard with whatever limited knowledge i have and by googling the queries here and there. But I want to be expert in this and know the tool inside out.

Please suggest some resources that I can follow along and learn everything in power BI up to date.

Thank you :)

Microsoft learn is the primary resource, its free. Work through the pl300 learning path and top up with YT on topics that are a bit tricky to see more in depth explanations with more real world examples. "DAX guide" is also one of the best resources. If you are coming from Excel you will be very frustrated initially. Things "that just take 2 seconds" seem very hard in PBI. For a while you will wonder what the point is, until one day you will have the "ah hah" moment and from that point on you will understand. The first major difference is the data has to formatted correctly and (mostly) only has column context which is wierd when you come from spreadsheets where everything is row and column context A1, B6 etc. Master Power Query to clean and tidy your data and load it into Power BI. That's right there are basically two separate programs within PBI desktop. That confuses people. When your data is in PBI from Power query the next whole new world is data modelling, joining tables together with relationships. This is an entire skill in itself. Then DAX for calculated columns just like excel formulas in tables. Although familiar, with experience you understand they should only be used as last resort. Measures, the secret sauce that turbocharges your content. Little variables that can be used almost anywhere to bring hugely powerful insight into data. Visuals and thier formatting with hundreds of options on each one. Play with the ones from the store but 90% of work is achieved with just the standard visuals but there is a massive, deep rabbit hole of custom visuals Finally, the top tier of "I understand this" is filter context. Which is how all these elements work together to create incredible depth of analysis on a single page. Good luck.

I've done the free SQL BI courses, and the advanced DAX Maven Analytics course. The only option I know of are the SQL BI paid courses, but if I'm putting that much money on something, I need to know my options. Thank you.

You should definitely continue learning and absorbing information, but I don’t think you necessarily need to do this through paid courses. I continue learning by reading and trying to help with questions here, subscribing to YouTubers, and following or connecting with Microsoft MVPs and employees on LinkedIn. What is your motivation for wanting to be among the best? I don’t think I’m in the top 3% in the world but I think it would be fair to say I’m in n the top 5% in my organisation and possibly top 10% in my country (Australia) and I’ve taken no formal training. I have 5 years of experience with Power BI and 2 more years of experience with Excel Power Query before that and now I teach a paid course on intro to Power BI. From what I’ve seen the most capable Power BI Developers are not valued only for their knowledge and expertise on the tools but what they bring in terms of the soft skills like gathering requirements, working together with stakeholders, upskilling junior team members, gaining the confidence to present to senior leaders, and also being able to effectively articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences. There is no course for this. You hone these skills over time. If you are seeking more hard skills from courses though, I would stick with SQL BI. I know that Microsoft employees take those courses (e.g. Adam and Patrick from the Cube) and probably others too. I would love to take their courses, and I hope to one day when I can justify the expense or make the business case to my employer for them to reimburse me, but I know I’m not there yet and I might never get there and I’m ok with that. Learning Power BI skills is not a sprint. It’s not even a marathon. It’s a lifestyle. Enjoy the ride. 🕶️

As the title suggests, I am looking to learn everything there is in powerBI. I want to learn right from data modelling, to learning advanced DAX to being good at creating aesthetic designs. I am decent at powerBI, but struggle with understanding complex DAX, or understanding how to arrange data in the most optimised way(star schema, one single fact table etc.) Currently I am working on a survey data, and the person helping me suggested that I unpivot the rows to make my job easier and it never even struck me that it could be done. So how do I reach that level and where do I start? I want to know what all to cover so that I know I have covered the basics of all topics. Thanks in advance!!

I'm a beginner in data management and reporting work, I have been working with excel and power point for the last 3 years, since I graduated college.

I see great opportunities in this area in the report automation sector, especially in power bi, but I have found that it is more difficult to learn than excel, in excel, most of the information you can find on the internet, but in power bi you have to devise it yourself.

Could you recommend me some online free courses to learn the use of this tool?

I'm an experienced analyst but only recently getting introduced as we transition our reporting off other platforms like MicroStrategy. I've used Tableau on & off for almost a decade and am really experienced with SQL. Have a bit of DAX experience going back to the introduction of PowerPivot and what little I've done exploring PowerBI.

What's your go to courses for learning PowerBI? Bonus, if you've got any great suggestions for data modeling for Power BI

If I don't have access to PowerBI platform/server via work, it's it possible to get a trial/free license with a personal email account?

June 7, 2024 - I subscribed for yearly last year, paid around 65$. I also took SQL courses there, which is really needed in my job. And now I'm trying to finish DA Analyst with Python. DataCamp is good but like everyone says you cannot rely on one source. Continue this thread Continue this thread ... I think they are good. Also, I'm a seasoned Power BI instructor and I happen to be doing some frees sessions upcoming.
