Consumer Reports has Samsung as by far their lowest rated refrigerator brand, giving them a 52 with the next lowest being Frigidaire's 58. LG is their highest rated brand with a 75, and even Consumer Reports states that's surprising due to their past compressor issues, but those issues do seem to be in the past. Yale Appliance has a series of videos on Youtube and they service what the sell, and they've rated LG as the brand with the fewest services calls percentage wise the past couple years. r/Appliances on Reddit: Is Consumer Reports full of crap for refrigerators?
September 5, 2024 -
For years, I've used Consumer Reports recommendations to filter from the universe down to a few models, whether I'm looking for a car or appliance. However, their top scoring fridges are consistently LG or Samsung, which have a terrible reputation on this sub. I was considering some LG top or bottom fridges as they show CR's highest "reliability" ratings, but then a neighbor asked if I wanted a free LG fridge filter, because it doesn't fit his new fridge and NONE of his kids have an LG fridge old enough for it to still fit. That an entire family tree's refrigerators crapped out within the last couple years was enough to anecdotally convince me. So, what gives? Is CR worthless now?

LG is the biggest appliance manufacturer in the world. It possibly makes more than 100 times the washing machines as much as Speed Queen (which is loved here in the sub) If SQ has a failure rate of 10% and LG 1%, that’s still 10x many unhappy LG customers, some of whom who trickle down into the sub and complain. People who are satisfied rarely come online and voice their opinions. I’m not saying CR is the oracle when it comes to reliability and satisfaction. But there are very few places which publish long term reliability and satisfaction rates and CR is one of them and it is significantly better than the loudest voices on Reddit

Best refrigerator brand
I would avoid Home Depot for appliances. My son and daughter in law received a refrigerator that had been very clearly damaged by the delivery company and Home Depot was very difficult to work with on a replacement - even though they were notified immediately. If took numerous calls over several days until he found someone from HD who cared enough to actually solve the issue. (Read their TOS very closely.) We buy from a locally owned appliance dealer who will match the big box store prices. They steered us away from LG and Samsung, and recommended either GE or Whirlpool. We bought a GE and have had no issues in 6 years. I hesitate to call it BIFL just yet, but it was priced very well. More on reddit.com
An actual RELIABLE brand for a refrigerator?
"...my entire life growing up, Kenmore was the most reliable brand." Prepare for having mind blown: Kenmore never, ever made one single appliance themselves - they were always GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, or whatever with a Kenmore logo slapped on them. It kept people in-house at Sears...but as Sears started to fail, they started putting their Kenmore brand on cheaper makes. More on reddit.com
