I personally have the Kings fold up one. It's pretty good for the price and it's nice to be able to cook on it with the grill. Has everything you want in your list. I was originally going to buy the Darche one but it's a bit smaller and heaps more expensive so I didn't get it. They look identical to the Kings one though. I'd heard that you should steer clear of the other style with flat metal sheets that slide into slots because the heat will eventually warp the metal and it won't assemble anymore. More on reddit.com

I’m in the market for a flat pack fire pit and would love some recommendations! I’m after something durable and portable for camping trips. Ideally, I’m looking for a fire pit that:
Packs down flat for easy storage and transport.
Comes with an ash tray.
Preferably stainless steel.
Would appreciate any recommendations you’ve used and loved, or if you’ve spotted something that fits the bill. Also open to any pros/cons you’ve found with different designs or brands.

I personally have the Kings fold up one. It's pretty good for the price and it's nice to be able to cook on it with the grill. Has everything you want in your list. I’ve got an old Ezy Q, made of 5mm thick steel, slots together easily still after quite a few years of use. I can’t see the fire ever getting hot enough to warp the thick steel. It throws out a lovely glow though when it’s up and it packs down flat to go back in my trailer. It’s pretty heavy, it must be said, and these days it’s fairly rusty, but that makes no difference to the fire. Not sure if they’re still making them that thick though. I have a friend with one of the newer Darche fold up things, stainless steel. Works a treat as well, but takes up a bigger footprint than mine when packed flat.

i have heard that stainless steel can create a carcinogen called hexavalent chromium when welded. if i make a fire pit with stainless steel, would that be unsafe? quite often i see on the marketplace fire pits created with old stainless steel tubs from washing machines, which seems to suggest it is safe, but i would rather be safe than sorry.
failing that, what would be a good material to make a fire pit from? cast iron is quite expensive and heavy, and isnt really something i can work with. there are plenty of metal drums that can be bought, but they are usually painted, and the paint will burn.
