My son is going to college next month and is trying to figure out what mattress topper to buy. The mattress they provide is like a cot mattress, and this will go on top of it. He is 5'8" and weighs 168 pounds. He likes a bed that's medium to medium-firm (he finds the tempurpedic topper to be too soft). The bed will be twin XL, so it needs to come in that size.
Any advice appreciated!

Should you buy a new mattress or a mattress topper?
Mattresses should last 8 to 10 years. If you've had an uncomfortable bed for less than that, a mattress topper can reintroduce comfort to your sleep. Mattress toppers are great for softening a bed that's too firm, increasing motion isolation, and, in some instances, introducing cooling features, but if your bed is sagging, lumpy, or no longer supportive, a mattress topper is only a bandaid fix. If your bed is older than 10 years, look for a replacement in our best mattress guide.
Hey folks,
Lately, my mattress and I have been at odds, prompting me to consider the idea of investing in the best mattress topper I can find before splurging on a brand-new mattress. I've come across quite a few praises about how a good mattress topper can revamp the comfort level of an existing mattress.
I'm eyeing a topper that strikes a nice balance between being cushy and supportive, particularly for my back. My budget is capped at around $200, but I'm open to exceeding it a tad if the topper is a standout.
I’ve heard some good things about the Tempur-Pedic, Lucid, and Linenspa brands. Anyone has experience with these or any other brands you'd recommend?
Also, an easy-to-clean and maintain topper is high on my wishlist. And if there are certain materials or brands known for their durability and comfort, I'm all ears.
I'm all set to dive into the suggestions from this savvy community.
Thanks a ton in advance!
