The big priority will be to have a vacuum with an actual height adjustment, since you don't want the brushroll bogging down on the carpet or for the suction motor to get starved for air. Modern bagged vacuums are the way to go for a low maintenance machine in my opinion, as they don't need to be emptied nearly as frequently and don't require any routine filter/cyclone washing. At the cheapest end, the $145 Hoover Windtunnel T-Series Max has a good height adjustment range and a stretchy hose. These are generally seen as a more upmarket and better built alternative to the Hoovers, occupying the $200-300 pricepoint. While you said you are leaning towards an upright, power nozzle canisters are great jack-of-all-trades vacuums for carpets, hard floors, and furniture.
