February 19, 2024 -
I am anticipating getting three big blue stem plants in my backyard pocket prairie. Just wondering yalls experience with how it self seeds. If I put three of them in a ~15x15 ft garden bed is it only going to be bbs in three years? Should I consider putting them somewhere else? Or maybe just put one in the pocket prairie? Thank you 🌾

That should be fine in a 15x15 garden. Mine are 3 years old and haven’t spread too much. When talking about bb being aggressive, it’s mostly just aggressive against shorter grasses and shorter wildflowers. It never takes over to such an extent that it’s the only thing growing. In fact, in a local prairie I’m helping manage, we struggle to get native warm season grasses like big bluestem to take hold against the sea of Canada goldenrod.

I planted 3 one gallon big bluestem, hoping they would spread out and basically merge into one 6x6 area, and they have very politely kept in their original spot. I’m going to plant more this year so I can have a bigger patch. I haven’t noticed any reseeding either, and they’ve been there for 3 years. They have spread slightly, but nothing like I was lead to believe. I always find plant aggressiveness statements to be untrue(at least in my gardens) nothing that was said to be aggressive has spread nearly as much as I hoped it would, and things that aren’t known to be so spready are everywhere(golden Alexander’s, for example)

Big Bluestem is a perennial, warm season bunchgrass growing 1 to 2 m tall. It is found in a wide range of soil conditions from wet, to poorly drained to hot, dry and open sandy soil.
