Brizo Shower Valve Trim Ring Won't Push Into Place

Brizo shower - looking for any feedback
Two months late...but I had a Brizo Sensori Shower installed in my master bathroom about 8 months ago. It has a thermostatic valve with an overhead 11 inch raincan, a wall mounted showerhead, a multi function wall mount handshower and body sprays with individual volume controls for each head (except the sprays). Just about everything is made of solid brass. The water restrictors in the showerhead and handshower must be removed for optimal performance. This shower absolutely blows the previous one out of the water (pun intended). I am very pleased with all of the available functions...the 11 inch raincan provides plenty of coverage. The showerhead feels like a massage head when the valve is wide open but more relaxed when opened a crack. Same with the handshower.
More on reddit.comWe recently had a new bathroom installed and the shower has a Brizo rough-in and valve trim kit.
However, the valve ring will not snap into place because they stops are sticking out. My contractor is telling me that the stops are too long, but I think that there may something missing or incorrectly installed.
See picture below.
Should the rough-in be located deeper into the wall? Something else?
No Fasterners and not magnetic. Can you help me?
