This is not a viable small business to start unless you have some twist like making really high end cards or something unique. The fact that you are asking about machinery tells me you haven’t worked in the industry. Your competitors have multimillion dollar national networks and advertising. Vista print. Staples. Zazzle. I think you would be better served finding something where you aren’t going to be crushed on price, convenience and exposure. I looked online real quick and you can get a copy machine style printer for probably 5k that wouldn’t suck but probably wouldn’t hold up for commercial printing I’m thinking. They go up to like half a mil What made you want to do business cards? It’s not a bad idea you are just late to the table. I had the idea to sell used college textbooks and spent a whole summer working on the idea. Talking to banks for financing and processing..(I had just finished freshman year of college). I’m looking to find a ID Card Printer that will print high quality photos to use with our timekeeping and security entrance/exit software. Not a high volume per year, only about 500-600 cards, but I’m thinking laminate because we don’t want photos that will scratch and fade. We don’t really need a magnetic stripe since we use barcodes. We’re currently using a MagiCard Rio Pro that has been nothing but problems. And using it needs to be simple and intuitive. So what do you use and why? Datacard, Fargo, Magicard, Zebra, or something else?
