I shot some "test footage" in c-log. I don't think I had ever color graded and went through that process so I was gonna try it. But when I went to view it on my desktop and tried to play the video it wouldn't play. Imported it to davinci resolve and I think it was only an audio clip that appeared.
Tell me what an idiot I am and how to fix it.
Canon R7 and put the SD card in a USB and plugged it into my PC. Did not actually move the file to the SSD so maybe that was the issue.

Does the video play in VLC? VLC works for me, so I'd give that a shot. Do you have the free version of resolve? The free version doesn't work with the 10 bit h.265 footage, so either buy the studio version or convert to Prores using something like shutter encodeer.

So, I have a C-Log like setting for my 5d mkIV I downloaded online and put onto my camera. With that said, is it any different from the C-Log that canon would put on it, if I sent it out to them to put it on. More on dpreview.com

You can load Technicolor's Cinestyle profile . I've put it on my 7Dmkii and I've found the footage quite good. Not quite as good as a Log profile but very usable. When I shoot video for work I use a Panasonic GH4 with VLog. I've found flat profiles very helpful for getting the detail and professional look I want. More on reddit.com

I don't do a lot of video on my DSLR and my previous job I used a Sony video camera that didn't have a similar picture style or shooting mode, so keep that in mind with my response. However, my understanding is that shooting in C log or other flat picture styles isn't for the look but more for the ability to do more when giving the footage the color treatment in post. You have more control over contrast, details in shadows/highlights, etc. You can load an unofficial "c log" picture style on your canon as well as Cinestyle by Technicolor to accomplish this. It's worth exploring if you plan to spend the time in post color correcting. But if you want to shoot it and share it (so to speak), it might not be for you.
