r/Cameras on Reddit: So how good actually is my iPhone 11 Pro Max camera?
March 7, 2024 -

Hi everyone! I’m new here. So I’ve been interested in getting into photography and am thinking about getting a camera. The thing is that I’ve heard iPhone cameras are actually pretty great so I’m wondering, what kind of camera is equivalent to the camera on my iphone 11 pro max? I was thinking for example about getting a used digital camera but I’ve heard it said that most iPhones have better cameras than any digital camera under $100. So I guess my question is, how much would I have to invest in to get a camera that can outperform my iphone?

The iPhones downfall is its sensor size and lens attachments. Their strength is Apple’s computational “photography”. Everytime you take a photo the phone processes the image, for example… taking multiple photos at once and then combine them into the single photo you see. With an actual camera and a RAW file, this would be done on photoshop/lightroom. You would need to do those steps manually whereas iPhones will do it for you. It may look similar to mirrorless cams or DSLRs but that’s at a quick glance. A RAW file will have more data to play around with and adjust in post which means you can make the image look how you want it to look. Anyhow, To answer your question, you’d need to invest maybe $500-1000. Something like a Sony a6000 with a Sony 50mm or a Sigma 16/30mm will immediately blow the iPhone out of the water… even the newest iPhone just won’t compare to the detail and quality… assuming you got your settings right! 😃👌🏻

Probably around $400. A used high end point and shoot like the Sony RX100 III competes with the latest iPhones in image quality. At around $700-800 modern mirrorless cameras clear smartphones by a major margin, and by the time you're spending over $1000 you can reliably shoot professional print quality images that make an iPhone look bad. To be clear, I say this as someone who loves his iPhone 14 Pro and has taken some awesome snaps with it. It's really good as far as smartphone cameras go, but shooting with a mirrorless is such a better experience and has so much more dynamic range and low-light performance it's not even remotely worth using my iPhone for anything but quick social media snapshots anymore.

iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max review: The iPhone for camera and battery lovers - CNET
October 11, 2019 - This year's most expensive iPhone is the $1,449 iPhone Pro Max with 512GB of storage. Even with 256GB of storage -- the minimum you'll likely want for a high-end phone like this -- it will set you back $1249. There are two main reasons to go for this year's most extreme iPhone: Either you want that larger OLED display (2,688x1,242 versus 2,436x1,125 for the Pro) or you want that extra hour of battery life. I wouldn't want to spend this much. But if you really are using your phone as a professional camera and you want to see every pixel, you want the best viewfinder and editing display you can get.

iPhone 11 Pro Max Camera issues - Apple Community
So I’ve been conducting some tests, my biggest issue is the strange blurry effect the built in camera app adds to photos in low light, the X and XS don’t do this · That's actually entirely different, it's Night Mode. Basically in low light, the iPhone 11/11 Pro will take multiple exposures over a period of time to be able to take a better quality picture in low light, but the downside is it will take one to two seconds to do so, and if you move at all there will be blur.

September 17, 2019 - I’m not dismissing trypophobia, but having used the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max for a week ahead of its release, I can definitively say everyone needs to chill out. Almost everyone I’ve shown the iPhone 11 Pro to say it’s not as offensive in person — the lens rings aren’t nearly as thick as closeup images make them appear — and the design is one of a kind (for now). The fact that I literally couldn’t go anywhere in New York City without drawing attention from people who spotted the triple cameras suggests the iPhone 11 Pros already have what Android phones could only dream of: celebrity status.
