r/NorthCarolina on Reddit: Can I walk into a NCDMV without an appointment?
August 4, 2024 -
Trying to walk into at 7 AM tomorrow morning for level 1 permit- can I do that? If it’s too early, when can I do it?
How do I check the hours and if you can walk in?
If it isn’t until noon, ideally what time should I arrive tomorrow?

Hours are listed here: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/locate-dmv-office/Pages/dmv-offices.aspx I would get in line super early if you don’t have an appointment and bring a chair for after lunch to walk in.

Make an appointment. My last three experiences were a complete shitshow without one, unless you drive well away from a major city.

Do I have to have an appointment for the DMV to get a license in NC, or can I just walk in and wait? : r/NorthCarolina
December 24, 2021 - You can walk-in, you don’t have to have an appointment. I have taken my son permit and then to get his license and my daughter to get her permit all since COVID. We never had an appointment, but I did go to a smaller county next to us and I was there before they opened.

October 29, 2023 - To clarify (my situation), I was not able to renew online because it was time for the eye check and new picture. When I tried to do it online it simply told me I wasn't eligible to do it online and had to make an appointment, which was about 2 months out. Called and they told me they couldn't do walk-ins - Morehead City.

May 1: DMV Schedule Changes to Increase Walk-In Availability
Appointments will only be available in the mornings through the 11 a.m. hour and can be booked at skiptheline.ncdot.gov. “We're making adjustments to increase walk-in availability because that's what we've heard our customers want," said NCDMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin, “and given that about 25% of appointments are no-shows, we will be better able to maximize efficiencies by shifting to more walk-in availability."

If you don’t have an appointment, you can check the walk-in wait time at specific locations to see if they are accepting walk-ins for the day and how long the current wait time is (please be aware that these are estimates, and your wait may be longer).
