What's the difference between IIHS and NHTSA safety ratings?
NHTSA uses a five-star rating system to evaluate factors such as frontal crash protection, side crash protection, overall crash protection, and rollover resistance. IIHS uses ratings of Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor; it conducts several tests covering crashworthiness, and it also evaluates headlights. Vehicles with the best scores are given a Top Safety Pick or a Top Safety Pick+ designation.

December 4, 2024 - Essentially a large, Ford Taurus-based sedan, the MKS has an outdated interior that provides poor visibility, as well as a small trunk that some critics have labeled as “useless.” The weak 3.7-liter, V6 engine has contributed to poor reliability ratings and it has scored badly on IIHS’ safety report. If you’re in the market for a Lincoln, you’d be well served to look at another model. ... Ah, the Dodge Journey. Like all Dodge vehicles, the Journey competes largely based on price and affordability. At a starting price of $20,000, it has a more attractive price point than many comparable vehicles in its sport utility vehicle class. However, this vehicle scores woefully by just about every measure.

December 17, 2024 - For 2024, in order to earn Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must score Acceptable or Good in an updated moderate front overlap crash test, which adds a dummy in the seat behind the driver to evaluate rear-seat crash protection. The test mimics what happens if a vehicle crosses a center line and 40 percent of its front end hits a similarly sized oncoming car at 40 mph. Vehicles must also score Good in an updated side-crash test introduced in 2021. The IIHS, which is funded by the insurance industry, has tested automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection since 2019.

r/whatcarshouldIbuy on Reddit: A definitive safest vehicle for 2024?
July 22, 2024 -

As a new father in the market for our first family vehicle, I am perplexed by the lack of a definitive safest vehicle. I understand that the industry standard testing and its respective organisations assign consumer vehicles a safety rating by which you can see a spectrum of “safe” vehicles but what is truly the safest car on the road?

I find it odd as a hobbyist in many different things, that a simple google or YouTube search for “the safest vehicle” never returns a specific result? Is there corporate influence at play or is there just no simple answer?

I’d ask the community here a few questions:

Firstly, what do you believe is the safest vehicle on the market right now and why? (Specifically related to impact safety, excluding how testing organisations factor in things like electronic avoidance systems and other things not related to structural safety)

Secondly, where should I be searching for this kind of definitive data and why is it so difficult to find the so called “best” vehicle in regards to safety?

And lastly, what kind of questions should I be asking at dealerships in regards to safety and what can be done on my part after purchasing a vehicle to further improve the safety?
