November 24, 2024 - I’m not a classically trained player, I play modern chord based music, and to be honest none of these issues have ever bothered me or affected my play at all (and I used to own both a PX-S1100 and a PX-S3000), but if you are an advanced classically trained player it is something to be aware of. Keep in mind, this is an entry level piano marketed towards beginners, so in my opinion; the action is perfectly fine. And a nice touch that Casio included on the CDP-S160 is a matte finish on all of the keys which is nicer to play on that the shiny smooth white keys you’ll find on Yamaha pianos in the same price range.

I'm a beginner is looking to buy a digital piano. I'm really confused between these two models. The Casio has more features but I'm afraid that it sounds worse than the Yamaha. Any opinion or advice would be helpful.

The last time I tried one of the CDP series, it was decent, but I found it noticeably worse than the Yamaha P-45. Granted, that was the CDP-S150, so the S160 could have gotten better. I was expecting them to be pretty similar, but the action on the CDP-S150 just felt springy and cheap. At the time, it was a $50 price difference between the two, and I'd have happily paid the extra $50 for the Yamaha.

When I was looking for a digital piano I had the exact same doubt. From what I have researched, it depends wether you prefer sound quality or more functions. People say yamaha has a better sound in general, especially on lower notes, than casio. CDS-S160 will have more functions overall, and you can record what you play directly on the piano. With yamaha p45 you will have a piano with fewer functions. It has 10 voices, metronome and I think thats it. I ended up buying a p45. For me it was enough for studying at home and I'm very happy with it. I recommend it and I think you can't go wrong with it. But if you think having a few more functions on the device is important, CDP s160 is a nice option too.

I've been wanting to learn the piano for a while now and my budget is around $500 for an entry level weighted 88 key model. I'm considering one of these 2 options. The problem is none of the stores around me have FP-10s in stock and I probably won't be able to try it hands on before buying the used one that I have my eye on. The Casio I could try in-store. Judging from online videos I think I like the Roland's sound slightly better. Which do you think would be the best option to go for? Or would you maybe suggest alternatives? Thanks in advance! 🙏

I’m a complete beginner, not just with piano, but with music in general. Duolingo’s music lessons for kids got me interested. I had been looking for used keyboards on Facebook with no luck. Then, the day after I bought the FP-30X for $800 (including tax), I saw someone selling a CDP-S160 for $250, and it was in good condition too. That $550 difference is ~1/7 of my monthly take-home income, so it would’ve been nice to save it for other purchases. I’ve heard some negative reviews about the CDP-S160. I prefer tactile mechanical keyboards, but I think I might eventually get used to the cheap, light keys. Should I even bother to try the S160? Pretty sure it got stand and bench as well, which I still need to buy for my FP30X. I don’t have a lot of free time for piano, but I plan to spend around 30 minutes a day on either piano practice or a music theory class. After I get some basics music theory down, I want to also learn to play guitar. That said, the CDP-S160 does sound like a great deal to test the waters. Also, the FP-30X is already 4 years old since its release, and the previous model came out five years before that. So, the next Roland model might be coming soon, possibly a year from now, which could be a good time for me to upgrade from the CDP-S160. My economy brain is fighting with my monkey brain...I think I am starting to lean towards S160...

So what, you're going to spend a hours researching and agonizing buying and reselling on a purchase you've already made? To downgrade, then upgrade and waste more time and money you don't need to? The fact that the fp30x is a little old is basically irrelevant, it's an instrument not a piece of technology. You have a nice keyboard sitting in your living room right now, stop playing the marketing dance and go make some music. Sorry I'm not trying to be rude, I'm trying to be real with you. Snap out of it. Turn off the internet after you make a purchase and go live your life.
