Hi guys,
I just moved to North Charleston last year with my wife and got a new car, in Sep 2023. The dealer paid for all fees, etc (the regular stuff). I got my license plate a couple of weeks later.
This week, I got a letter from the DMV, an: Official Order of Suspension. Saying the reason is: Failure to Pay Vehicle Property Tax. Now, I have a couple of days to solve this issue before the DMV suspends my license plate.
Questions:
Is this a different tax that the dealer might not have paid? (I don't think so, but I am already raising the question to them).
Isn't the Vehicle Property Tax required before getting the License Plate and is valid for one year?
I moved from a temporary location, last year, to a new one (new address, still in North Charleston). I got my license plate at that temporary location. Could this be the reason for this? If so, why?
I don't understand why I am getting this notice. Can someone relate this case or help me to understand what is happening?
I plan to go to the DMV soon but would like to have information and understanding first.
Thanks!
Edit:
At the end, this issue has been a honest mistake from my part. I thought the Vehicle Propety Tax should have been paid by the car dealer; and also, I never got the tax bill.
I have already paid this in the Charleston's County Website, and next, I should bring the receipt to the DMV.
Thank you all for your comments and explanation.
