Answer (1 of 3): It really depends on what you’re shipping. I have a small business where I create resin art! I just got my first opportunity to do a custom for someone who lives outside of the US, in the UK. Does anyone have advice on shipping? My packages are 12x10x2 and usually weigh around 11oz. The UPS calculator said $122 for the cheapest option?! This can’t be right, can anyone provide some insight/advice? TIA

r/smallbusiness on Reddit: how do businesses get cheaper shipping costs?
November 23, 2022 -

hello, i have been interested in starting a small business to sell handmade items i make. while doing research, i found that the average cost for shipping my items(for their average size and weight) comes to about $20 more or less if i wanted to use my own packaging. of course theres the flat rate packaging but even then, those are around similar prices. i compared these shipping prices to how much other businesses charge for shipping similar items i wish to sell but with their own packaging and many charge around $5 for shipping. how do businesses ship items for such cheap prices?

they can do so with bulk rates, pre-sorted rates and relationships (discounts) with certain providers. They may also be incurring a loss to their margin by charging $5 to ship an item that costs them $8 to ship. USPS can also be tricky because you can beat their flat rate with flat rate by (geography? - not sure of their terminology) i.e. to ship flat rate within your state is less expensive then shipping flat rate across country if you know what packaging to use and what to search for on their site. Pirateship is great and the often even beat ebay's discounted rates.

agreed with the recommendation of pirate ship, its the cheapest of all of the ship services. they also allow you to compare UPS and other services besides USPS. the simple "first class mail parcel" is a good economy service, you can use that for anything up to one pound, and the rate is 3.50-6$ or so, depending on weight and distance. anything up to 15.9 ounces, use first class postage through pirate ship or one of the others -- although i definitely recommend pirate ship above the rest since they are a few cents to a few dollars cheaper. some other good tricks are using the "regional rate A box" from USPS (they provide the box for free if you order it through USPS online or at your post office, you can get 10-25 boxes mailed to you for free by ordering from USPS online) and also "cubic rate". regional rate A box is best for things that are only going a couple of zones, as its regionally but it can be as low as 7-8 dollars for something thats above a pound and going somewhat close by in zones. it goes up to 14$ or so depending on how heavy or how far. cubic rate is something i am just figuring out myself, but i use the 7x7x6 box that the USPS offers for free and that gets me in the cubic rate, but its actually tricky. its basically certain dimensions, small dimension, for things that are dense and heavy but overall small, so i dont know if that would work for you. if you can find a box that fits well and falls within the cubic rate its a great discount. that can be as low as 8$ and up from there, and my understanding is even if its heavy, you dont get charged more because it is only based on overall size -- so legnth x width of the package...let you know if it can qualify for cubic rate. i dont know if all services offer this, but you can get this through pirate ship. one last really helpful one is the flat rate bubble envelope offered by USPS. this is a fairly large bubble envelope made of poly, and you can stuff them up, its a if it fits it ships type of flat rate at around 9$. because its poly bubble wrap you may want more inner support. you can put the box inside one of these envelopes and save on shipping (envelopes are free, order from USPS). i have also taken from my recycling and sort of made a kind of box inside the envelope, for things that really need some extra. so placing the cardboard pieces inside can make a box like dealio inside the bubble envelope, and thats all free for the shipping materials using the flat rate bubbly and free cardboard.
