Huge disparity in pricing and speed, and I have yet to see it give a better code answer than Sonnet.

You are aware that coding is not the one and only use case for AI, right? BTW Opus is not considered the "flagship" anymore, it's just the biggest and most costly model. Still incredibly capable for creative or analytic complex tasks, writing of papers, documents and narratives, and anything that has to do with linguistic. Can create links between things that Sonnet often cannot. Also a very pleasant interlocutor and excellent for arguments, philosophy and law. To me the price is justified in some cases, still great value, even more if you use a subscription. If you need intermediate coding any open source model with reasonable parameters can do it, if you need advanced coding Sonnet 3.5 and o1 are the best. But if you think Opus is costly just look at o1 API pricing...

I’m on the $100/month plan. 1-2 prompts in I got my limit on Opus, then I spend most of my coding day on Sonnet.
Whenever I am on Opus, it isn’t obvious it’s writing code that Sonnet can’t. I see a bigger difference between prompts that do vs. do not have “ultrathink” rather than Sonnet/Opus.
Does anyone with more experience have a clear perspective on Sonnet vs Opus? Even on the benchmarks they are about the same.

Opus follows instructions better than sonnet for big tasks, but it can sometimes overthink or overengineer something. Sonnet tends to be more direct but can sometimes not follow instructions as good as opus. I'd say opus is great at planning and executing big tasks, while sonnet is best for simpler tasks that dont need the intelligence of opus.or at least plan with opus, code with sonnet, is another way.

Opus is absolutely worth it for me and a large codebase at least. It's not just the line of code being different, it's the entire logic process. Basically, it's much more efficient which saves me time.

I work in quantitative finance, so most of my programming revolves around building financial tools that detect and exploit market anomalies. The coding I do is highly theoretical and often based on insights from academic finance research.

I created an MCP to connect with my stock broker and gave Claude access to historical data and other tools required to trade on my behalf. I didn't ask it to execute any specific strategies yet but I realized it's not good at trading just using tools. I lost few bucks using this so far.

Currently the token limit for Opus is like 1/5th of Sonnet. However I don't think it is worth the price. Opus has lesser context and it is only good occasionally. The only issue is that Opus is not available in Pro. How do you all manage this?

The 1m token context sonnet is a gimmick for people who don’t know how to use smaller context efficiently or properly. Performance drops off dramatically with tons of context regardless of what the official limit is. I’d recommend learning how to use context efficiently and then not choosing between model based on their context limits. In the long run it’s a far more useful skill than anything else in this space like all those fancy “engineered” prompts people keep posting here
