A company I applied to made me do a CoderPad test. The whole thing was nothing but esoterica about various languages. Stuff actual engineers rarely deal with and when they do they look it up in the docs. Stuff like “What’s the second parameter to API function X?” “Which of call() or apply() take an array for parameters?”, “What’s it called when you mix asynchronous and synchronous functions”?, shit like that. It was an hour test of nothing but that for Java, Node, GoLang and C++. I totally failed even though I have well over 10 years of experience with each, building real stuff.
Anyway… I thought it was over. I got the results back and I failed hard on every part. I was pissed that I wasted my time on rote learning bullshit likely put together by some Indian engineer who’s used to that shit No! The company was “impressed” and wants to schedule panel interviews. WTF?
Clearly it’s some hazing thing and I told the company to fuck off…

Sounds bad, but it could be an honest mistake. I was asked to do a test for a Python/Go/AWS job. The Python section was hilariously easy, then the Go was some fiendishly tricky LeetCode thing, where you're basically screwed if you don't know the trick. And then rapid-fire multi-choice about obscure AWS services. Anyway, I emailed to complain, and apparently they asked the team to take the test themselves. The hiring manager apologised, and I took the job; ended up getting promoted to lead developer.

That’s why I no longer do Microsoft certifications. It’s more about language esoterica and your ability to memorize an api. The tests don’t seem to measure real-world ability. I have taken coder pad tests and I’ve administered plenty of them. I used to feel terrible because my company would task me to interview data science candidates, and I had to present them with a coder pad interview. Many would tell me that they haven’t coded in over a decade. It sucked, I was obligated to fail them because our company expected everybody to be able to code. I was forced to pass on experience data scientists for this reason.

Hello all,
I took amazon coding test today and for one of the problems the execution time was longer and 4 test cases failed because of that.
Can any of you guide me the best path to work on this gap ? Does practicing leetcode blindly will eventually get me there or is there a specific area or set of problems that I should practice more ?

They don't always use the same problems, so you can apply 10 times to the same company and never get the same problem and you may get the same problem each time. The general approach is to take the word problem and classify it in terms of best solutions to use. A simple example is that the words change around, but there are some common things that are solved a certain way that is best. If you look at all the solutions and classify them based on things like storage used, approaches, etc... You start to see things different. Practice more is the general rule, but it's really a "hit and miss" game. You really don't do any good until you master more and more types of problems. If you classify the problems into 20 categories and master 3 of them, then you've done something, if you master none of them, but understand 10 better, you still don't pass. It's game theory. You need to master problems so that you can recall them under pressure, not just keep practicing to improve the general understanding.

I have a degree in ECE but I haven't written any code in about 4 years. I have an exam for an embedded systems role I applied for, but it doesn't have any rules listed.
Would I typically be allowed to google things during this test? That's pretty much how I've always coded because I always get syntax and functions mixed up between languages. I definitely couldn't answer the sample question without googling C documentation.

Yeah… you won’t get access to Google, run through some LC or implement a sorting and search function from scratch for practice

Is this a takehome thing completed at your own convenience or a live interview? If it's a takehome then Google is usually allowed (or at least not possible to restrict). Although be aware they usually make the time insufficient to constantly be using Google like that. If it's a live interview there will be no access to external sources. That's pretty much how I've always coded because I always get syntax and functions mixed up between languages. Is this just lack of effort into learning C or do you generally have difficulty getting syntax and function names correct? If it's dyslexia or something there are some pretty reasonable requests you can make like having a C cheat sheet in front of you, I think most interviewers would allow that. Open Google usage won't be considered reasonable, though.
