May 21, 2024 - Got a bunch of grapes, 2 packs of strawberries, 4 packs of raspberries and bag of peppers for $18 which is insane considering the grocery store would have been $50+. I feel like being frugal, shopping around and using weekly flyers is the only way to grocery shop now since prices are insane. ... Yeah, this app is great. Just gotta keep in mind some stores have ongoing unlisted sales on certain items (usually dairy) that won’t always show up in it. ... Which Save-On are you hitting for decent produce? October 1, 2019 - Of the ones you listed it's basically the norm for most people in Calgary (with the additions of Costco and No Frills or Walmart). There are some Asian Places that have cheaper meat. Co-op and Safeway are pricier options usually along with Sobeys, Urban Fare, Save On Foods, etc. ... Hmm, I would suggest looking to some of the super markets in the NE as usually prices are cheaper there I found (I live in the NW but go to NE to buy groceries).

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Has anyone done a detailed comparison of grocery prices in common stores?
January 16, 2024 -

Lately I am seeing a lot of F#$% Loblaws type posts due to price gouging and other bad behaviour. I am all for that, but I'm not sure what a reasonable alternative is.

Currently my regular shops are No Frills and Costco. I have a Costco credit card and get 2% back on a different card on groceries at No Frills, as well as PC Points. Are there any better options?

I've seen a few one off examples like pasta sauce being $1.97 at Walmart and $5 at Loblaws, but I am not sure if this is the norm. When visiting these other stores and comparing receipts, the prices seem to be basically all in line with each other when in the same time period (not prices from 1 yr ago, for example).

There are differences, but they tend to even out more or less, and the idea that I'll be going and doing two different shops in the same day to secure some low double digit savings doesn't make a ton of sense to me. I guess I could see this for a high-price item, or for stocking up (e.g. meat in a chest freezer).

I've also seen a suggestion to visit asian or other third party smaller sellers, but in my mid-size city, the prices and quality are worse than what I get at either major retailer. Maybe that's more of a Toronto thing? Same with the local farmer's market - they want $13 for a half peck of apples for example.

Is there something I'm missing? Are there some obvious savings to be had here? Is Walmart or some other retailer consistently cheaper?
