Where do you get your groceries? And how much do you spend on average per month?
For our family of 4 we spend about $800 a month at Safeway. Wbu?
Honestly have no references on what a average weekly / monthly food bill looks.
Like is $100 a week high? Feels like you used to get away with $60 a week but now just basics cost a arm and a leg
Lately I am seeing a lot of F#$% Loblaws type posts due to price gouging and other bad behaviour. I am all for that, but I'm not sure what a reasonable alternative is.
Currently my regular shops are No Frills and Costco. I have a Costco credit card and get 2% back on a different card on groceries at No Frills, as well as PC Points. Are there any better options?
I've seen a few one off examples like pasta sauce being $1.97 at Walmart and $5 at Loblaws, but I am not sure if this is the norm. When visiting these other stores and comparing receipts, the prices seem to be basically all in line with each other when in the same time period (not prices from 1 yr ago, for example).
There are differences, but they tend to even out more or less, and the idea that I'll be going and doing two different shops in the same day to secure some low double digit savings doesn't make a ton of sense to me. I guess I could see this for a high-price item, or for stocking up (e.g. meat in a chest freezer).
I've also seen a suggestion to visit asian or other third party smaller sellers, but in my mid-size city, the prices and quality are worse than what I get at either major retailer. Maybe that's more of a Toronto thing? Same with the local farmer's market - they want $13 for a half peck of apples for example.
Is there something I'm missing? Are there some obvious savings to be had here? Is Walmart or some other retailer consistently cheaper?
