March 9, 2024What kind of salary could I earn straight out of college with a CS major but no experience in the field?
I just graduated in May with a CS degree and was able to get a software engineering job paying $70,000. I didn't have any internships or any significant projects outside my classes.
Also, I had no programming experience prior to my first CS class, and I wasn't the only one. Those who do have experience may have an advantage in the first few courses but I feel like it evens out after that.
That should answer your main question I hope, but I gotta say I think doing both a CS and a bio degree is very ambitious. Not saying you can't pull it off, but like others have said, both are difficult degrees. Even more difficult if you're trying to keep a near 4.0.
I think it would be a good idea to take one or two programming courses and see how you like them. If you find that you enjoy programming and can get through the beginner courses without too much problem then you might be able to pull it off. However, if you find yourself struggling in the first class I would not go for the dual major.
But whatever you end up doing, good luck!

A master's degree is not going to magically get you more money. Your pay is largely determined by: Location and company. Skill and track record. Interviewing and negotiating prowess. Apply for jobs at large Silicon Valley tech companies. Check levels.fyi and pick out a few that look interesting. Pass their interviews. Get hired. Profit. Much easier than going back to school for no reason. Worked for me, as a SWE with a BSEE from a mediocre state school and community college. More on reddit.com

Some mechanics make $36k/yr, some mechanics make $200k/yr. Some people in CS make $36k/yr, some make $200k, $300k, $700k. Boils down to your drive, aptitude, ability to learn and communicate, and some luck. A decent entry level CS job for a qualified candidate should be $60k-120k depending on location. Note these decent entry level jobs are remarkably competitive for the very same reason you're interested in CS.
